Goddard was the top area finisher at the Wichita Collegiate Tournament of Champions on Saturday, finishing second behind Joplin (Mo.) Jefferson.

The tournament was held at Goddard, where more courts were available.

The Lions had a semifinal singles player, Danny Jones, and its doubles team of Raymond Nola and Matt Vanhorn made it to the championship match against at team from Jefferson.

Jefferson swept all three first place finishes capturing singles, doubles and team championships.

"We did really well after preparing for this tournament for 2 ½ months," Jefferson coach Diego Camacho said. "They put in the extra work on the weekends so they deserve this."

Danica Patrick became the first female winner in IndyCar history today, taking the Indy Japan 300 after the top contenders were forced to pit for fuel in the final laps.

Patrick finished 5.8594 seconds ahead of pole-sitter Helio Castroneves after leader Scott Dixon went in for a pit stop with five laps remaining.

"It's a long time coming, finally," Patrick said. "I was managing to save fuel and keep the speed up and when I saw Helio I knew he was the one to beat."

The race in Montegi, Japan, was rescheduled because of wet track conditions Saturday.

Friday felt like the good old days at Long Beach: the paddock packed with cars, drivers besieged for autographs and the turbocharged Champ Car engines reverberating off the walls of the downtown highrises.

Today's Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach will be the last race for the soon-to-be-defunct Champ Car, which has been largely absorbed into the rival IRL IndyCar Series through a unification announced in February.

Nine former Champ Car teams and several former drivers from that series have already made the transition to the IRL for its first two races but, because the IRL could not get out of a commitment to run in Motegi, Japan, it was decided the scheduled Champ Car event in the streets of Long Beach would go on.

All of the teams that ran in Champ Car in 2007 are here, racing their Panoz DP-01 chassis and turbocharged Cosworth engines for the final time, with the only real difference that the points they earn will count toward the IRL championship.

Marco Sturm kept Boston's hopes alive when he scored with 2:37 remaining and the Bruins overcame three deficits to beat the Canadiens 5-4 Saturday night in Boston and force a seventh game in Montreal.

The Bruins, who lost all 20 previous best-of-seven series in which they trailed 3-1, will try to complete their bid to eliminate the top-seeded Canadiens on Monday night.

Sturm scored after rookie goalie Carey Price stopped his first shot but failed to control the rebound. Sturm collected it, skated across the crease from left to right, and a sprawling Price couldn't get to the other side in time.

So the Bruins still have a chance to win a playoff series for the first time in nine years and complete an improbable comeback after they began the series seeded eighth in the Eastern Conference.

Capitals 3, Flyers 2 --Washington stayed alive by knocking Philadelphia off stride early and holding onto the lead with another solid game from goaltender Cristobal Huet.

Joe Calzaghe didn't stop punching after a terrible start against Bernard Hopkins, and now the Pride of Wales is the best light heavyweight in the world.

Calzaghe remained unbeaten with a split-decision victory Saturday night, tenaciously rallying in the final rounds against his cagey 43-year-old opponent to end his long-anticipated U.S. debut with a flourish.

Hopkins (48-5-1) put on a master class in the veteran skills of their sport at the Thomas & Mack Center, knocking down Calzaghe (45-0) with a sneaky right hand just 70 seconds in before repeatedly frustrating Calzaghe's attempts to trade blows.

But after floundering against Hopkins' defense through the early rounds, Calzaghe never stopped working and wearing down his older opponent, eventually gaining control in the final rounds.

"I knew this wouldn't look pretty tonight," Calzaghe said. "He's so awkward. He gave me some good shots. It wasn't my best night, but I won the fight. The world title in a second division and a win in America is just icing on the cake for my career."

Joan Benoit Samuelson can see the finish line, and this time her legs are steady.

The 50-year-old Olympic gold medalist plans to run in her last competitive marathon today in the trials that will choose the U.S. team for Beijing. Deena Kastor, who won the bronze medal in Athens in 2004, is a heavy favorite to make the team. Two more berths are available for a group that includes Mary Akor, Samia Akbar, Zoila Gomez and Kate O'Neill.

Samuelson won the inaugural women's Olympic marathon in 1984, running into the Los Angeles Coliseum to the cheers of the American fans. She may not be a threat to return to the Games, but almost 30 years after the first of her two Boston victories the women's running pioneer is being hailed in her adopted hometown.

"Joan, so many years later, continues to inspire so many people, supporting women and distance running in general," said Kastor, the only other American woman to medal in the Olympic marathon. "Even before I started running, she was an inspiration to my entire household. It's a great honor to be a part of the event with her."

Although "The Star-Spangled Banner" hasn't been played at the Boston Marathon since Greg Meyer won in 1983, this year's Olympic trial gives organizers and fans a chance to salute an American winner.

Young area artists will soon be banding together to help keep the arts flourishing in Greensburg USD 422 schools.

Heart of Art: Next Generation will hold a benefit concert titled "Inspired" for the schools' music and art program at 7 p.m. Friday in Century II Concert Hall.

Walter Girton, event coordinator, said organizers saw an area in the rebuilding efforts that still needed help.

"I always tell people how the arts are overlooked," Girton said.

He said the proceeds from the event would go to the Greensburg school district to help buy new musical instruments and other art supplies.

Heavy weighs the karaoke crown. Many weeks, "American Idol" has ranked No. 1, 2 and 3 in the Nielsen ratings. But are those cracks we see beginning to emerge in "Idol's" mighty battlements? Last week, the charity special "Idol Gives Back" drew 17.6 million viewers. Last year, the same show attracted 26.9 million viewers. Is it just compassion fatigue?

No, "Idol's" erosion appears to be the real deal.

Last Tuesday, 23.7 million viewers tuned in to see the top seven sing Mariah Carey songs. That's the smallest audience for an "Idol" performance show in three years. All told, "Idol" is down 7 percent from last season and nearly double that among young adults.

Why the decline? Simon Cowell is blaming it on the lack of personality among this year's contestants. And the wicked wasp of pop music has a point. Every time I see the sanctimonious Brooke White go into her Mother Theresa act I want to throttle her neck until her eyes bug out. (Gee, did I just type that?)

Other problems need fixing as well. These one-artist theme nights are tedious. How do you make the Beatles sound boring? This batch of kids managed to do it -- twice! But Dolly Parton night? Mariah Carey night? And this week, Andrew Lloyd Webber night? Please make it stop!

Ethan Coen, the quiet one, has lots to say.

It just takes awhile before he spits it out. He'll do a version of the Stevie Wonder neck roll, looking around and past you, as if to focus on the improvisational teleprompter of his mind. The answers come slowly at first, punctuated by "Yeah... yeah." Long pause. Then, an elongated "Yeeeeeeah."

Usually Ethan is the Teller to his brother Joel's Penn in the Coen Brothers moviemaking dynasty.

On this day, he jokes about his typical reticence as he parks himself for late-afternoon coffee at an Italian restaurant in his lower Manhattan neighborhood. "I've got lots to say -- depends on the day. Not usually, actually."

But he's eager to engage in a rare interview because this film writer/director/producer wants to talk theater: He's written an off-Broadway play.

With her new album, "E=MC2," Mariah Carey has assembled a collection of perfect little pop pleasures that will charm even the staunchest naysayer.

There were songs on "Mimi" that felt a little forced, a little too desperate to be liked, but there's none of that on "E=MC2." In fact, the first notes of the album come from one of her patented high-register, dog-whistle flourishes that get her so much grief. But because she surrounds it with the irresistible hip-hop groove of "Migrate" with T-Pain, even that works.

Like many other rock and pop artists, Sheryl Crow knows that the days when her albums routinely sell several million copies have passed. With downloading and file sharing, record sales are down significantly in every genre. She no longer expects to get her songs played on commercial radio, and finds that satellite radio and National Public Radio are now her main outlets for airplay.

"I think pop radio is very driven by beats, by young artists, a lot of dance music, a lot of R&B," Crow said in a phone interview last week, ahead of her performance Tuesday night in Wichita. "It's just a different time. It's about what sells, and it's much more difficult to get on pop radio."

So how will Crow keep her career on track in this environment? The best strategy, Crow said, is simply to stay true to her earthy brand of pop music and the heartfelt lyrics that populate her songs.

"The best I can do is make records that matter to me, that I think have integrity, and just trust that there will always be a need for singer-songwriters, and it's not all about dance music," she said.

Crow certainly follows that mission on her latest CD, "Detours," which is widely seen as the most personal and outspoken of her career.

Ed Harrison knows what you're thinking when you learn he's a maracas virtuoso.

Yes, the maracas -- those gaily painted balls-on-sticks that rattle when you shake them, usually found in kindergarten music boxes and on the walls of Mexican restaurants.

Harrison knows what you're thinking because he thought the same thing when he was told he just had to hear this guy play maracas.

"Of course," Harrison said, "when you hear that, you go, 'Maracas? You guys have been in the sun too long.' But then I went to see this guy play. It was unbelievable what he could do with a pair of maracas."

Since that introduction in a nightclub in Caracas, Venezuela, in 1983, Harrison has become one of the best maracas players in America. From his post as a percussion instructor at Chicago Conservatory at Roosevelt University, he has written papers on playing techniques and given workshops on the maracas across the country.

Wichita State's Connor McHenry shot a final round 70 to win medalist honors and help the Shockers to the Missouri Valley Conference tournament title on Tuesday.

McHenry, a sophomore from Jefferson City, finished the tournament with a 208, edging teammate Dustin Garza by four strokes.

The Shockers dominated the tournament at the Davenport Country Club in Davenport, Iowa. They burst out to a 15-stroke lead after Monday's two rounds. Tuesday, WSU finished with a 284 to win by 24 strokes over Southern Illinois.

WSU's Ryan Spears (214) finished in a tie for fourth. Zach Potter (219) finished in a tie for ninth. Ty Sanders (224) tied for 15th.

The Shockers won their 13th MVC title and their seventh since 1999. McHenry is the 13th Shocker to win medalist honors.

Shockers' Dirks on a mission

Wichita State senior Andy Dirks says he doesn't know how long his on-base streak is. Teammate Ryan Jones isn't sure he believes that.

"Yeah, he's a liar," Jones said with a big smile. "He makes fun of me all the time for it. He's like 'Well, what's your streak at Jones?' "

In Dirks' mind, getting on base is expected.

"As the leadoff guy, that's my job to get on base any way I can," he said. "I guess I've got a streak going, or whatever, but I just come to the yard with same mind-set every day."

Bad, good and waiting.

That sums up the news on what's happening with Kansas basketball and the guard position after Monday's developments.

For starters, the bad news isn't all that bad for the Jayhawks. Sophomore Sherron Collins underwent successful arthroscopic surgery on his left knee Monday morning.

"He has plenty of time to heal," KU coach Bill Self said.

The good news for the Jayhawks is that Tyshawn Taylor, who recently obtained a release from the national letter he signed with Marquette, will visit KU on Wednesday.

This isn't the best time to go looking for smiles in the Royals' clubhouse. The sting of that lost weekend in Oakland lingers even as they prepare to open a six-game home stand tonight with the first of three games against Cleveland.

Still, it's worth noting that Zack Greinke seems to be having more fun than ever. More fun, certainly, than he ever believed he could have in the big leagues.

There is personal success on the mound, yes. Greinke is 3-0 with a 1.24 ERA in four starts despite his own disappointment in Oakland; he saw a 4-0 lead Saturday turn into a no-decision.

But it's more than that.

Greinke finds himself enjoying the big-league lifestyle, the camaraderie of the clubhouse and even the ebb-and-flow work schedule of a starting pitcher.

Endless days are nothing unusual for NFL teams as they prepare for the draft. Even more overtime is the norm for a team like the Chiefs, who have a needs list so long they would have trouble fielding a team if they had to play a game today.

"We've gone deeper than we have the previous two years," said Bill Kuharich, the Chiefs' vice president for player personnel. "We've done 321 players. We've spent more time on each player. We've gone from 8 a.m. until 10 (p.m.) for 14 straight days. We've spent more time in-depth on players because of the quality of this draft.

"We didn't do as many players last year. The most I've ever done for one draft is 321 players in 20-plus years of doing this. But there are good reasons we took so much time on each particular player."

As much attention as there might be on the Chiefs' first pick, which is fifth overall, they can't afford for this to be a one-player draft. After finishing a their 4-12 season with nine straight losses, the Chiefs gutted their roster, dumping several veteran players they deemed part of the problem and not part of the solution.

The result is a team that can use a lot of help in a lot of places. The Chiefs will soon need a boxcar to carry all of their rookie offensive linemen. They also must have cornerbacks, wide receivers, a quarterback and a kick returner.

A fire early Saturday destroyed the baseball dugout and attached storage shed at a Northwest High practice field.

Lt. Stuart Bevis, with the Wichita fire department, said the damage was estimated at $20,000. It is being investigated as arson.

"You know, it was one of those things where I got the call; and I got sick to my stomach," Northwest athletic director J. Means said. "It's so discouraging."

The covered dugout and shed was built and paid for by Northwest baseball parents, the school's booster club and with money used from a memorial fund.

Among the items in the shed were a pitching machine, baseball bats, two dozen baseball helmets and baseballs.

• The Shockers defeated KU 7-3 on April 1 in Lawrence, their fourth straight win in the series. WSU will attempt to sweep the season series for the second straight year tonight.

• Shaeffer Hall started the first meeting and allowed three hits and three earned runs in four innings. He struck out four and walked three. He started last week against Missouri State and gave up six hits and four runs in 3 1/3 innings.

• Kansas defeated Nebraska 6-3 on Sunday to salvage the final game of the series in Lincoln. C Buck Afenir went 5 for 10 with four RBIs in the series. RF Ryne Price leads KU with 54 RBIs and nine home runs. LF John Allman leads the team with a .354 batting average and .476 on-base percentage.

• WSU stole 16 bases in 17 attempts in three games against Southern Illinois. The Shockers may run again tonight. KU catchers have thrown out 16 of 40 would-be thieves.

• Tyler Fleming has not started for WSU this season, although his 31 innings are fifth on the team. He threw 5 2/3 innings in relief against Long Beach State, allowing four hits and no runs, and 4 2/3 against Washington State, allowing one hit and no runs. He has not pitched since a two-inning relief stint against Creighton on April 13.

Over the year, the Kapaun Mount Carmel boys golf program has had that one player who could shoot that really low score on a consistent basis.

From Corey Novascone in the early 1990s to Pete Krsnich to Matt Lazzo, the Crusaders always seemed to have the elite golfer.

This year's team appears to be different, and maybe for the better. The Crusaders may not have that one go-to guy, but they do have six guys who on any given day could be the low score.

Kapaun's balance was on display Monday at Braeburn Golf Course against Bishop Carroll. All six golfers shot sub-80 scores, which led to a 296-311 victory in a battle of the lone remaining unbeaten teams in the City League.

"These kids just have so much confidence in themselves and each other," Kapaun Mount Carmel coach Blake Wells said. "And that's really what great teams are made of."

With the top spot in the City League baseball standings at stake, a lot was on the line between North and Northwest on Monday night at West Side.

North played like it.

Thanks to several clutch hits, North handed rival Northwest its first City League loss 6-1.

"This was huge for us," North starting pitcher Matt Applegate said. "They are a good team and were ahead of us. This was big."

Sheldon Howell got things started for North (11-1, 10-1 in the City League) when he blasted an RBI triple into the gap in left-center in the first inning. Two innings later with two outs, Tyler Grimes belted a Brandon Phillips 3-2 pitch over the right-field wall to extend the lead to 4-0.

With run support like the Andover Central pitchers received Monday night against Andover, they didn't need their best stuff to win.

Ben Minnihan got the win in the first game of the doubleheader sweep and was 3 for 3 at the plate, including a three-run double, as Central rolled 12-2 in five innings.

The Jaguars used a seven-run fourth to put the game out of reach.

Ben French was the winner in the second game as Central cruised 21-5.

French also helped his own cause at the plate, drilling a three-run homer and an RBI double.

On "30 Rock," the NBC comedy Tina Fey created, writes and produces, she plays Liz Lemon, a competent television producer whose personal life is a catastrophe.

In "Baby Mama," which opens Friday, Fey portrays Kate Holbrook, a competent Philadelphia organic-food store executive yearning for a baby whose personal life is a catastrophe.

The central difference between Liz and Kate is that the latter sports tighter skirts and higher heels. Amy Poehler, Fey's former "Saturday Night Live" "Weekend Update" deskmate, co-stars as her working-class surrogate mother from Jersey.

So here sits Fey, 37, the woman who in real life has it all: the hit show, the new movie, the husband, the 2-year-old daughter, some Emmys.

"Things are going good. My life is not terribly angst-ridden. I have a lot of support," Fey says. "And I don't do anything else."

The Allman Brothers Band has canceled its annual run of performances at the Beacon Theatre in New York as founding member Gregg Allman continues to recover from hepatitis C.

The band had been scheduled to play 15 sold-out shows at the Beacon -- an annual run of concerts that draws people from all over the country who pay several hundred dollars for tickets to see the blues-rock legends.

The band usually plays in March but previously said it was postponing those shows until the fall while Allman recovered from hepatitis C, a blood-borne disease that can lead to cirrhosis of the liver or liver cancer.

On Friday, the Allman Brothers Band announced on its Web site that the shows would be rescheduled for early 2009, the 40th anniversary of its founding.

"New York's a second home to us," Allman, 60, said in a statement. "We love playing there and are as disappointed as anybody not to be able to get there this time."

Wichita State played long ball with Oklahoma State for longer than expected.

Just not long enough. The 13th-ranked Cowboys defeated No. 14 WSU 5-3 on Wednesday in a rain-delayed game at packed Reynolds Stadium. Two late-inning home runs erased a WSU lead and sent the Shockers to their third straight loss in the series.

"They have a lot more power than we have," WSU coach Gene Stephenson said. "They got 13 hits off our mid-week pitchers. I expected us to hit the ball better off the mid-week pitchers we're going to see."

WSU leadoff hitter Andy Dirks homered twice, once in the first for a 1-0 lead. His solo shot with one out in the seventh gave the Shockers a 3-2 lead.

It did not last long against the Cowboys, who started eight hitters batting .300 or better. Dirks' homers gave WSU 22 for the season. OSU's two boosted its total to 53.

The pieces of the puzzle that Kansas coach Bill Self spent more than four years putting together on the way to this year's national championship has now been completely scrambled.

With junior guard Mario Chalmers declaring Wednesday for the NBA Draft, all five starters and seven of the top nine players could possibly be gone.

Like sophomore teammate Darrell Arthur, Chalmers will test the draft waters but will not hire an agent for now to leave his options open to return to KU.

"If I hear anything that's not in the first round, I'm coming back," Chalmers said.

And what Chalmers is hearing right now is that he's projected to be selected between 25th and 35th in the June 26 draft. Since there are only 30 picks in the first round, that makes him very borderline.

Trading away Jared Allen tore another huge hole in a Kansas City roster that was already cratered with them.

But sending the disgruntled All-Pro defensive end to Minnesota also enriched the Chiefs with three additional draft picks and presents an opportunity for one of those watershed weekends that will lay the foundation of Super Bowl seasons to come.

With six selections among the top 82, the Chiefs have more picks than their three AFC West rivals combined. With about $30 million in cap space, they have the money to pay them.

But blow this draft the way they've wasted others in recent years, and there's likely to be new management fairly soon at Arrowhead Stadium.

"Now the onus is on us to make good picks," president and general manager Carl Peterson said. "But this certainly gives us an awful lot of versatility, maneuverability and opportunity. We have never been in this position with this number of draft choices in the first 82."

It has reached the point where Emporia State's baseball players can't avoid thinking about it.

As the wins have continued to pile up, it has been difficult for the players not to talk about.

What started with a 17-6 win over Minnesota-Duluth on March 8 is now a 35-game winning streak spanning 46 days. After starting the season 7-3, the Hornets are 28-0 in the MIAA and ranked fourth in the nation.

The NCAA Division II record is held by Savannah (Ga.) State, which won 46 games in a row in 2000.

The streak certainly deserves the attention of the players, but they haven't let it change the way they play the game.

Wichita State's cleanup hitter beat out two infield singles in the Shockers' one and only big inning. Kansas mashed two home runs to provide most of its offense.

It's not conventional or awe-inspiring, but it worked for 14th-ranked Wichita State in Tuesday's 6-4 win over Kansas at Eck Stadium. The Shockers defeated the Jayhawks for a fifth-straight time, in front of 6,943 fans, the largest regular-season crowd in WSU history.

Most of them saw what they came for in the fourth inning, when WSU (31-7) scored six runs on six hits.

"I wouldn't say we did an awful lot offensively," WSU coach Gene Stephenson said. "But we did in that inning. We got some really key hits."

Kansas lefty Shaeffer Hall kept WSU under control through the first three innings. The Shockers couldn't get the ball out of the infield.

Ever since negotiations for a long-term contract broke off last year, Jared Allen's departure from the Chiefs carried a sense of inevitability.

It came true Tuesday night when the Chiefs agreed to trade their Pro Bowl defensive end to the Minnesota Vikings, a source said.

The Chiefs and Vikings had discussed a deal earlier in the day that would send Minnesota's first- and both of the Vikings' third-round picks to Kansas City. It's unclear whether the deal had changed by the time it had been agreed upon.

The teams had also discussed swapping picks in a later round.

Allen also agreed to terms on a contract with the Vikings and was en route to Minnesota on Tuesday to sign the deal. Terms of the contract were unavailable.
