| Pitcher pledges to WSU Wed, 09 Jul 2008 05:58 CDT Enid, Okla., guys listen to other Enid guys, especially when it comes to pitching. Senior right-hander Tobin Mateychick, one of Oklahoma's top high school baseball prospects, has committed to Wichita State after considering Arkansas and Arizona State. Current Shocker pitcher Tyler Fleming, also from Enid, helped recruit Mateychick with his recommendation. "He told me how the kids are treated and how much fun they have," Mateychick said. "They all love playing there." Mateychick (6-foot-5, 180 pounds) recently threw in the Perfect Game 2008 National Showcase in Minneapolis, an invitation-only event for 200 athletes. He went 8-2 with Enid High. This summer, he is 5-2 with a 2.35 ERA for his American Legion team with 70 strikeouts in 31 2/3 innings. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Beasley a mortal on Day 2 Wed, 09 Jul 2008 01:41 CDT Michael Beasley griped about some calls, tumbled after missing layups, then shook his head in disappointment after a rebound bounced off his outstretched hands. His first summer league game drew raves. In his second, well, Beasley looked like a rookie again. One day after scoring 28 points in his much-hyped debut, Beasley returned to earth Tuesday, finishing with only nine points in Miami's 90-81 summer league win over New Jersey in Orlando, Fla. The second overall pick in last month's draft was a mere mortal, missing all but one of his 13 shots from the field and collecting nearly as many fouls (seven, there's no automatic disqualification in summer league) as he did points. "You can't have a great game every night," Beasley said. "But that wasn't a bad game, though. We still won." | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| Pelfreywins 5thstraight Wed, 09 Jul 2008 01:41 CDT On this night, it was Mike Pelfrey who looked like the emerging young ace while All-Star Tim Lincecum struggled to find his way. Pelfrey, a former Heights High and Wichita State standout, won his fifth straight start, Carlos Beltran drove in four runs and the surging New York Mets beat Lincecum and the San Francisco Giants 7-0 on Tuesday. "I think that him being so good, that's going to bring the best out of other people," Pelfrey said. Beltran hit a three-run homer in the first inning and Carlos Delgado also connected off Lincecum (10-2) to help the Mets win their fourth in a row. After taking the final three of a four-game series in Philadelphia last weekend, New York is 1 ½ games behind the first-place Phillies in the NL East. Two of the three hits Pelfrey (7-6) allowed over seven sharp innings were infield singles. He struck out five and walked none in a dominant performance, pushing the Mets (46-44) two games above .500 for the first time since May 20. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| BASEBALL Wed, 09 Jul 2008 01:41 CDT The Wingnuts' game on Tuesday against Sioux Falls was postponed due to rain and will be made up as part of a doubleheader beginning at 5:05 tonight at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium. The games are scheduled for seven innings. Sioux Falls won the first game of the series 13-1 on Monday. It was Wichita's first home game of the second half and first of a seven-game home stand. Starting pitchers Ryan Ford of Sioux Falls and Wichita's Brad Davis will have their outings pushed back a day and will start the first game of the doubleheader. HOCKEY New Thunder coach Brent Bilodeau has signed his first player -- second-year forward Mike Batovanja. Because of his intensity and scrappy play, Batovanja quickly became a fan favorite last season. He scored 10 points in 46 games, earning the team's Unsung Hero Award. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Long wait ends with USBC title Wed, 09 Jul 2008 01:41 CDT It was well worth the wait. Team Tilt bowled in the U.S. Bowling Congress Open on Memorial Day weekend in Albuquerque, but the Kansas-based team had to wait until Sunday to earn its championship. Kansans Chris Greene (Wichita), Jay Futrell (Derby), Joe Keltner (Haysville), Russ Wilson (Lawrence), along with Thomas Ault of Oregon, posted the best score among more than 12,000 teams in the tournament that ran from Feb. 16 to Sunday. It's the team's first USBC title. "We waited six weeks, not that we were counting or anything," said Greene, 25. "It was pretty nerve-racking. They update the scores online and they even had some of it running live. I checked it religiously... five to six times a day." Team Tilt finished with a total of 3,374 pins in three games. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| Movie Maniac: Ledger Oscar buzz adds hype to hype Wed, 09 Jul 2008 01:41 CDT Random movie thoughts: Holy marketing, Batman! -- The buzz about the late Heath Ledger's chances of getting an Oscar nod for his turn as the Joker in "The Dark Knight" seems a bit premature. Nothing against Ledger -- his passing was tragic, I thought he was a good actor, and the performance may rightfully deserve praise -- but let's not add hype onto hype, OK? And, really, does "Dark Knight" need the extra press? Still, I'm rabidly anticipating the film's July 18 opening. I might even wear my Batman underwear. Just kidding! Really, I don't have any. Robot romance -- Who would have thought that the most romantic movie of the year would be one with animated robots? Not only is Disney/Pixar's "WALL-E" a breathtaking technological achievement, it's also a tender, touching story. We root for the lonely, naive WALL-E and duty-driven Eve throughout the film, and we get completely swept up in their romance. Listen up, Hollywood: If these guys can make us care this much about animated characters, surely you can do the same with actual humans. Or at least try. High expectations -- Movies with marijuana have made a comeback this summer, with mixed results. We've already had the short-lived "Harold and Kumar Escape From Guantanamo Bay," which attracted, like, five people -- and they were just there for the munchies. Still to come, though, with much promise, are the Sundance darling "The Wackness," with Ben Kingsley as a pot-smoking psychiatrist, and the reportedly hilarious "Pineapple Express," with Seth Rogen and James Franco. We haven't seen this much weed on screen since Cheech and Chong's heydays. I mean high days. Kansas film scene thrives -- Lawrence is quickly becoming the Austin of Kansas. Several film projects are coming out of the filmmaking community there. Jeremy Osbern's musical "Air," which recently screened in Wichita, is still on a theatrical run, and now "Bunker Hill," directed by Sundance alum Kevin Willmott ("C.S.A.: Confederate States of America"), just screened in Washington, D.C., and kicks off a festival run Aug. 9 at the Santa Fe Film Festival. A Wichita screening is in the works. Willmott's "The Only Good Indian," which filmed scenes at Cowtown last summer, is in post-production. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| McConaughey welcomes baby boy Wed, 09 Jul 2008 01:41 CDT Matthew McConaughey's longtime model girlfriend, Camila Alves, has given birth to the couple's first child, a 7-pound, 4-ounce boy, according to OK! magazine. Alves, 24, gave birth Monday night in California, according to the report. The 38-year-old actor announced that Alves was pregnant in a posting on his Web site in January. "Camila and I were side by side the entire time," McConaughey told the magazine. "We are both tired and elated, and are so happy to have created the greatest miracle in the world -- having a child and making a family." "Now comes the greatest adventure -- raising one, together." | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
