The following is a look at the hopefuls: |

Morris twins arrive at Kansas Tue, 01 Jul 2008 01:41 CDT The Morris twins have been delayed in getting to their new basketball home by academic issues. But Marcus and Markieff Morris finally arrived at Kansas and began summer classes Monday. They still have yet to qualify academically, although perhaps the tall lads from Philadelphia will get bonus points for knowing the answer many incoming KU recruits don't know. Who was the famous big man from Philly that came to KU? "Wilt the Stilt," Marcus answered without hesitation. "I knew that," Markieff said.
Mahoney gets shot at swim trials Tue, 01 Jul 2008 01:41 CDT That Wichitan Erin Mahoney will swim in the 200-meter freestyle and 200 individual medley today at the U.S. Olympic swim trials in Omaha is an accomplishment. But Texas A&M coach Steve Bultman says the impressive part is how far Mahoney has come in the past four years since she first walked on to his team. "Erin's a girl that has improved tremendously," Bultman said. Bultman knew of Mahoney, a 2004 Southeast High graduate, because of her sister, Anne, who swam at Stanford and narrowly missed qualifying for the 1988 Olympics.
Summer softball tournaments offer players a chance to show talents Tue, 01 Jul 2008 13:06 CDT Steve Goldring doesn't worry about whether his Kansas Blaze softball team wins championships, stating with a laugh that he has "enough plastic trophies on my shelf." Now, helping his daughter, Jesi, and the rest of the Blaze players earn college scholarships, that's what is important to him. "They share the same goal I do -- college is their goal," Goldring said. "Winning trophies isn't a big deal. If we compete and look good, it doesn't matter if we win or lose." Summer is the time to earn those scholarships. Last weekend's Kansas Amateur Softball Association's state tournament at Two Rivers Youth Club featured six games at once for most of the three days. Fans crowded into the stands watching games, players milled around snacking or talking.
FOOTBALL Tue, 01 Jul 2008 01:41 CDT Kansas quarterback Todd Reesing was named to the Maxwell Award watch list and while Jayhawk linebacker Mike Rivera and Kansas State defensive end Ian Campbell were tabbed to the Chuck Bednarik Award watch list, the Maxwell Football Club announced. There are 75 players on each list. Semifinalists for the awards will announced in early November. Former Kansas City Chiefs star Emmitt Thomas will be enshrined next month in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, and the Chiefs announced that Thomas' No. 18 will be retired before a game Oct. 19. Thomas will be the ninth Chiefs player to have his number retired. Thomas, who attended Bishop College, played 13 seasons in Kansas City and had 58 interceptions, which is ninth in NFL history. He also played for the Chiefs in the first Super Bowl. CYCLING
Hoff continues hot streak at Olympic swim trials Tue, 01 Jul 2008 01:41 CDT Katie Hoff made it 2 for 2 at the U.S. Olympic trials. And she's just getting started. Showing no signs of tiring, the Baltimore teenager gutted out another grueling win Monday night, rallying to win the 400-meter freestyle just 24 hours after she set a world record in the 400 individual medley. Hoff became the first U.S. swimmer to lock up two races in Beijing, but there's no time to savor her accomplishment. She's already done about a mile of races in Omaha and plans to compete in four more before the week is out, pursuing an Olympic program just slightly less ambitious than the one Michael Phelps will attempt in hopes of knocking off Mark Spitz. "The plan was to take it out strong with nice, easy speed," the 19-year-old Hoff said. "I don't think I had as much as I was hoping, but I brought it back real well."
Kansan gets Olympic spot Tue, 01 Jul 2008 01:41 CDT Nick Symmonds, Andrew Wheating and Kansas native Christian Smith qualified for the U.S. Olympic team in the men's 800 meters Monday night. Wheating, from the University of Oregon, and Symmonds, from Willamette University in Salem, Ore., got one of the biggest ovations of the track trials when they crossed the finish line 1-2 on Monday night. Smith, currently a member of the Oregon Track Club, beat out four-time national champion Khadevis Robinson for the third spot by lunging at the finish line. Both Smith and Robinson tumbled to the ground, and Smith took third by six-hundredths of a second. Smith's time of 1 minute, 45.47 seconds was enough to make the Olympics' A qualifying standard. Robinson was trying to make his second Olympics.
Williams sisters keep rolling Tue, 01 Jul 2008 01:41 CDT Wimbledon has already lost its top-four seeded women's players, while the Williams sisters keep rolling toward another sibling final. Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal are also closing in on another title matchup. Monday's fourth-round play at the All England Club produced more upsets at the top of the women's seedings, but also offered more convincing wins from the champions and title contenders. Second-seeded Jelena Jankovic, hobbled by a knee injury, fell 6-3, 6-2 to Tamarine Tanasugarn. No. 4 Svetlana Kuznetsova, the 2004 U.S. Open champion, lost 6-4, 1-6, 7-5 to 19-year-old Agnieszka Radwanska. With top-seeded Ana Ivanovic and No. 3 Maria Sharapova eliminated last week, none of the top-four seeded women reached the quarterfinals -- the first time that's happened at Wimbledon and also the first time at any Grand Slam tournament in the 40-year history of the Open era. The highest women's seeded player left is No. 5 Elena Dementieva, who cruised to a 6-2, 6-1 win over Shahar Peer. Only three of the top 14 seeded women are left.

Even a superherocan't save 'Hancock' Tue, 01 Jul 2008 01:40 CDT What does "Hancock" want to be when it grows up? Superhero comedy? Social satire? Tragic love story? They all swirl around in Will Smith's latest, but no sooner does director Peter Berg's film find a comfy rhythm than it jumps the tracks and becomes a different movie. The first hour is a diverting inversion on the usual superhero cliches. We first see John Hancock (Smith) sprawled on a bus stop bench, surrounded by empty liquor bottles. He appears to be homeless. A boy approaches, pokes Hancock and informs him that a dangerous high-speed chase is wreaking havoc on L.A.' s freeway system. Hancock takes a long pull on a bottle of hooch and then rockets into the sky, leaving a crater in the sidewalk. He does capture the miscreants but only after doing millions in damage to private buildings and the public infrastructure. That's what happens when you fly drunk.
