| Seminole hit parade puts an end to WSU's season Mon, 09 Jun 2008 02:47 CDT The Game 3 loss looked a lot like the Game 2 loss, and this time there were no second chances. Wichita State's baseball season is over, so close to Omaha, but not nearly as close as it seemed. Florida State routed the Shockers 11-4 to win the best-of-3 Tallahassee Super Regional on Sunday. The second-ranked Seminoles, after losing the opener 10-7 Friday, battered Shocker pitching in Saturday's 14-4 win and again Sunday at Dick Howser Stadium. "We're not used to giving up that many runs," WSU coach Gene Stephenson said, speaking for a pitching staff worn down by Florida State's patience and power. Florida State (54-12) advances to the College World Series for the first time since 2000 and will play Stanford on Saturday at Rosenblatt Stadium. No. 13 WSU (48-17) finished its best season since 1996 one win short of its ultimate goal, losing in a super regional for the second straight year. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Wingnuts conclude tough trip with loss Mon, 09 Jun 2008 01:38 CDT The St. Paul Saints used two big innings to knock out the Wingnuts, taking the final game of a weekend series 9-7 on Sunday in St. Paul, Minn. Wichita took a 2-0 lead in the third inning, but St. Paul responded with five runs in the bottom of the third -- two of which scored on bases-loaded walks. The Wingnuts used a four-run fifth to grab a 6-5 lead. The Saints regained control by scoring four runs in the sixth inning. Wingnuts starting pitcher Brad Davis (3-4) took the loss. The Saints lead the American Association's North Division. The Wingnuts concluded a two-city road trip with a 1-4 record and slipped to third in the North. They return home Tuesday to begin a three-game series against Lincoln. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| FSU's lopsided Game 2 win forces all-or-nothing final Sun, 08 Jun 2008 02:35 CDT It took Florida State less than three innings and 85 pitches to seize the momentum in the Tallahassee Super Regional. That is all Wichita State got out of starter Aaron Shafer, and he walked off the mound after surrendering 10 hits and eight earned runs. After knocking out WSU's best big-game pitcher, the Seminoles cruised to a 14-4 win at Dick Howser Stadium to tie the best-of-3 series at 1-all. "I think the scoreboard speaks for itself," Shafer said. "It was one of those times when I needed one little break or one little anything and I couldn't get it." The teams meet today in the deciding game, with a berth in the College World Series on the line. The 13th-ranked Shockers (48-16) must regroup after the Seminoles (53-12) ended their 10-game winning streak with a dominant victory against their No. 2 starter. WSU scored three runs in the first inning, then went quiet until a home run in the eighth. By the seventh, coach Gene Stephenson started subbing to rest his starters. "That was a real butt-kicking today," Stephenson said. "We were out-horsed and outplayed." | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Big Brown can't deliver Sun, 08 Jun 2008 01:40 CDT When Big Brown turned for home, something wasn't right. Jockey Kent Desormeaux knew the big bay colt was finished. Trainer Rick Dutrow Jr., who guaranteed racing's first Triple Crown in 30 years, knew it then, too. Big Brown straggled home last Saturday, losing the Belmont Stakes to 38-1 long shot Da' Tara. Eased up in the homestretch, he was so far behind at the end that his margin of defeat wasn't even charted. "He was empty. He didn't have anything left," Desormeaux said. "There's no popped tires. He's just out of gas." Da' Tara went wire-to-wire, with 1-4 favorite Big Brown being eased up before he even finished the 1 ½ miles, the longest and toughest of the three classics. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Shockers get Game 1 jump on Seminoles Sat, 07 Jun 2008 01:39 CDT Wichita State's road show is one win away from making the ultimate trip. The Shockers defeated Florida State 10-7 on Friday afternoon at Dick Howser Stadium to take a 1-0 lead in the best-of-3 Tallahassee Super Regional. Everybody in black knows one more win sends the Shockers to the College World Series for the first time since 1996. And nobody needs to give a speech to remind them nothing is wrapped up yet. "At this point it should be a known thing," said pitcher Anthony Capra, who struck out the game's final batter with the tying run at the plate. "We still have maybe one, maybe two games to go before we do anything. We know we need to stay focused." Today's forecast for focus is good for a team on a 10-game winning streak and three straight on the road against ranked opponents. No. 13 WSU (48-15) has right-hander Aaron Shafer pitching and armed with an impeccable record in big games. In support, the Shockers are playing with a confidence and momentum that seems unshakable. WSU handled Oklahoma State twice in Stillwater last weekend and is poised to do the same to the second-ranked Seminoles (52-12). | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| K-State's future won't include Hoskins Sat, 07 Jun 2008 01:39 CDT During Kansas State's NCAA Tournament trek to Omaha, David Hoskins was just a spectator, unable to place weight on his left leg. It was his proudest moment as a member of the K-State basketball team. And any future moments are now history. Hoskins, the 6-foot-5 senior forward from Canton, Mich., regarded as the Wildcats' heart and soul, is finished at K-State. "I'm going to play overseas," he said. "Hopefully, I'll get to the NBA someday." He had not applied for a medical hardship that would've granted him a final year of eligibility. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Royals end road skid, beat Yankees 2-1 Sat, 07 Jun 2008 03:14 CDT There really is a time for every purpose. It seems Ecclesiastes got it right. Or the Byrds. Take your pick. The Royals ended their road losing streak Friday night in the most unlikely of places — Yankee Stadium — with a 2-1 victory over the New York Yankees. It was, of course, harder than it had to be but no harder than expected. The Royals again squandered too many scoring chances. They benefited from a favorable call in the clutch by umpire Ed Montague. And they needed Joakim Soria’s ice-cool closing talents. But they won. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| WSU must contain explosive Florida State attack Fri, 06 Jun 2008 01:39 CDT Scouting reports in college baseball share little in common with basketball and football. Few games are televised, so programs don't have graduate assistants recording and collecting games throughout the season. There is no mandated swap of game films. It's a lot of word of mouth from friendly coaches or scouts, statistics and instincts. "We don't watch film or anything like that," WSU catcher Tyler Weber said. "All of our stuff comes from that we have to play to our abilities. We always pitch to our pitcher's strength and what's working for them." No. 13 Wichita State doesn't need much evidence to understand No. 2 Florida State is perhaps the best hitting team in the nation. The Seminoles scored 74 runs in their final four regional games last weekend. They play in a hitter-friendly park where the right-field fence is a mere 320 feet from home. They lead the nation in batting average (.356) and walks (402 in 63 games), which establishes them as a team that grinds away pitchers until they get a pitch suitable for a line drive. "If we get into a slugfest, we have no chance," WSU coach Gene Stephenson said. "Hopefully, we will not be intimidated." | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Seminoles love slugging Posey Fri, 06 Jun 2008 01:40 CDT His coach, Mike Martin, looks upon him with adoring eyes. His teammates give him standing ovations. His fans rejoice in his every movement. Yet Florida State catcher Buster Posey has managed to maintain his level head and his we're-all-in-this-together outlook. "Buster Posey is a special young man," Martin said Thursday on the eve of FSU's best-of-3 super regional against Wichita State. "They come along maybe once every 15 years. He's just one of a kind." Certainly, that applies on the field, where Posey's numbers are silly: a .468 average, an .897 slugging percentage and a .572 on-base percentage. He has 24 homers and 86 RBIs and is among the best defensive catchers in the country. Many thought he would be the first player taken in Thursday's amateur draft. But when the Tampa Bay Rays bypassed him in favor of high school shortstop Tim Beckham, Posey slipped to San Francisco at No. 5. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Royals notebook: Bale apologizes for hitting door Tue, 06 May 2008 01:50 CDT Royals left-hander John Bale made his toughest appearance so far this season on Monday. Nearly three hours before the Royals faced the Angels, a remorseful Bale stood in front of his locker and talked about how he let the team down. Bale broke a bone in his pitching hand Friday night when he hit a hotel door. “This is tough,” Bale said quietly as he addressed reporters. “I would like to apologize first of all to the Royals organization, teammates and my coaching staff for my actions. It was uncalled for. It was a moment of frustration. I wish I could do anything to take it back, but I can’t.” Bale didn’t take questions after his statement and didn’t give a reason why he was upset. He said it will be four to six weeks before he can start throwing. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| LSU forces deciding game Mon, 09 Jun 2008 01:38 CDT LSU scored five runs in the ninth inning, including Sean Ochinko's go-ahead single, as the Tigers rallied to stave off elimination in a 9-7 victory over UC Irvine in the NCAA Baton Rouge Super Regional on Sunday. The deciding third game at LSU's Alex Box Stadium is tonight, with the winner going to this week's College World Series. Trailing 7-4, LSU (47-17-1) loaded the bases with no outs when Jared Mitchell, who homered in the eighth, walked to force in a run. Pinch-hitter Nicholas Pontiff drove in a run on a fielder's choice, Blake Dean hit an RBI single to tie it and Ochinko followed with a chopper over the third baseman's head to drive in the go-ahead run. DJ LeMahieu's sacrifice fly capped the rally. Louis Coleman (7-0) allowed one hit in the final three innings for LSU, which had its 23-game winning streak ended the night before. The Tigers struggled against UC Irvine starter Daniel Bibona, who scattered nine hits over 7 1/3 innings, but got to work against the Anteaters' bullpen. Rice 6, Texas A&M 5 --Adam Zornes hit a two-run home run in the eighth inning to send host Rice to its third straight College World Series. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Rice tops A&M in opener Sun, 08 Jun 2008 01:40 CDT Jordon Dodson drove in four runs and Cole St. Clair had a terrific outing in relief, leading Rice past Texas A&M 9-7 on Saturday in the first game of the best-of-3 super regional in Houston. St. Clair (10-2) allowed one run and two hits during the final 4 1/3 innings, bringing the Owls (46-13) within one win of their third straight College World Series appearance and seventh since 1997. Rice has won four straight games in the postseason and hasn't lost in the regionals or super regionals since 2006. With the game tied at 6 in the fifth inning, the Owls scored three runs with two outs against Kyle Thebeau (6-5). Jimmy Comerota and Mozingo started the rally with walks and scored on a double by Dodson, who later came home on an error by first baseman Luke Anders. The Aggies (46-18), who lost to Rice in the super regionals last year, had tied it with three runs in the top of the fifth. UC Irvine 11, LSU 5 -- At Baton Rouge, La., Sean Madigan and Brock Bardeen each hit home runs, leading UC Irvine over LSU in their super regional opener and ending the Tigers' 23-game winning streak. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| Stanford nabs World Series bid Sun, 08 Jun 2008 01:39 CDT Jason Castro drove in four runs, including three on a sixth-inning double, to put Stanford into the College World Series with an 8-5 victory over Cal State Fullerton in the super regional on Saturday night in Fullerton, Calif. The Cardinal (39-22-2) used its sixth consecutive victory and eighth in 10 games to eliminate the Titans (41-22), seeded fifth nationally. Castro broke a 5-5 tie in the bottom of the sixth with his third hit of the game, a double down the left-field line that scored Zach Jones, Jack Schlander and Colin Walsh. Fullerton had scored two runs in the top of the sixth to force the tie before loading the bases with one out. But Brian Wilson lined into an unassisted double play by first baseman Brent Milleville, who tagged first base to end the threat. Austin Yount (5-3) got the victory in relief, and Drew Storen earned his second save in two games. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| NOTES Sun, 08 Jun 2008 01:40 CDT Indians Cleveland starter Jake Westbrook will have surgery on his right elbow, sidelining him for the rest of the season. Westbrook was placed on the disabled list Tuesday, retroactive to May 29, and Indians trainer Lonnie Soloff said Saturday he will have surgery to repair a torn ulnar collateral ligament in the next week or two. Westbrook went 1-2 with a 3.12 ERA in five starts this season. He was sidelined for about a month with a strained oblique muscle, then felt pain in his elbow after his first start back. | Thinking inside the box Sun, 08 Jun 2008 01:40 CDT J.D. Schneider is the type of guy who people refer to as the heart and soul of a sports franchise. Schneider has spent 22 years with the El Dorado Broncos, a summer baseball team for college players, serving in positions from general manager to team vice-president. Yet this season, the electrician by day, baseball enthusiast all other times, is leading the club in a way that he's never done before -- head coach. "I had never given a lot of thought to it," said Schneider, who has filled in as coach before, but only during some weekend stints when the coach was on a recruiting trip. "But this was what was best for the team." Kevin Paxson was supposed to be the team's coach this season. But four days before reporting to El Dorado, he informed management he would be unable to coach the team after accepting a head-coaching position at Mid-America Christian University in Oklahoma City. Paxson had been an assistant at Oklahoma Baptist. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Wakefield, Ramirezget Boston on track Sun, 08 Jun 2008 01:39 CDT Tim Wakefield bounced a few pitches in the early innings, a sure sign that the Seattle Mariners were in trouble. Wakefield baffled most of Seattle's hitters for seven innings and Manny Ramirez hit his 504th homer to lead the Boston Red Sox to an 11-3 win Saturday. "If I'm out there missing pitches, both the catcher and hitter are having trouble with it, then it's a good sign," Boston catcher Kevin Cash said. "When the hitters are not having awkward swings that's not a good sign." Wakefield (4-4) allowed two runs and five hits, just three of them beyond 30 feet. He struck out six and walked two. It looked like a backyard game of catch, with Wakefield getting the ball and pitching quickly. One knuckler to Kenji Johjima in the second inning was clocked at 56 mph. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Zambrano showing power at the plate Sun, 08 Jun 2008 01:40 CDT Earlier this season, Arizona Diamondbacks starter Micah Owings was receiving a lot of attention for his prowess as a hitter, and rightfully so. He was batting well above .300 and even hit a pinch-hit home run. It is possible all that attention stirred up some competitive fire in one of the game's other good hitting pitchers, because recently no one has been hotter than Chicago Cubs starter Carlos Zambrano. With three hits Monday against San Diego, Zambrano was leading major-league starting pitchers who have more than 25 at-bats with a .366 batting average. He is one of three to have an average higher than .300 -- Philadelphia's Cole Hamels and Florida's Mark Hendrickson are the others. Zambrano tied Monday's game in the fourth inning with a run-scoring triple, the third triple of his career. "I'm fast, huh?" he joked after the game. "It was good to help my team." | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| Saints top Wingnuts 5-4 in 10 Sun, 08 Jun 2008 02:55 CDT Andrew Bennett hit a bases-loaded fielder's choice in the bottom of the 10th inning Saturday night to lift the St. Paul Saints to a 5-4 victory over the visiting Wingnuts. St. Paul, the American Association's North Division leaders, rallied from 2-0 and 4-2 deficits to force extra innings. Brent Krause's solo home run in the eighth tied the score at 4-4. The Saints manufactured the game-winning run with two outs in the 10th. Ben Thomas doubled, Ryan Priddy was intentionally walked and Scooter Jordan walked to load the bases. Wichita brought in reliever Doug Hurn to face Bennett. Bennett hit a grounder to the left side that shortstop Kevin Hooper fielded and tried to force Priddy at third. But Priddy slid in ahead of the throw, and Thomas scored the winning run on the play. Chris Colton and Michael Thompson drove in runs in the third inning for Wichita. The Wingnuts took a 4-2 lead in the sixth when David Gates reached on Priddy's fielding error with two outs. Jose Amado singled him to third. Brenan Herrera and Stephen Pearson added back-to-back RBI singles. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Games add meaning in short run Sun, 08 Jun 2008 02:57 CDT A major-league baseball season is 162 games, making it difficult to place significant importance on any one game. Lose one and it can be brushed off with the "it's a long season" cliche. Not so in the American Association, a league in which teams vie for playoff contention during two 48-game halves. The Wingnuts' season is one month old today and they're already past the halfway point of the first half. "It goes real fast," Wichita infielder Kevin Hooper said. Perhaps no games have taken on the importance of Wichita's current six-game road trip to Sioux Falls and St. Paul, two teams in contention in the AA's North Division. Through Friday, the Saints led the division at 17-10 while Sioux Falls and Wichita sat 1 ½ games behind. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Wingnuts roll over St. Paul Sun, 08 Jun 2008 02:55 CDT Michael Thompson and Stephen Pearson each drove in four runs Friday as the visiting Wingnuts hammered the St. Paul Saints 12-2 in the opener of a three-game series against the American Association's North Division leaders. Thompson went 3 for 4 with a three-run homer _ his fifth of the season _ as Wichita scored the game's first nine runs. Pearson and Chris Colton each went 2 for 4 with a home run, part of Wichita's 11-hit attack. It was more than enough offense for Wingnuts starter Leonard Landeros (3-1), who yielded one run and four hits in seven innings. Scooter Jordan drove in both runs for St. Paul.

| Florida State fan gives up two runs Mon, 09 Jun 2008 01:38 CDT Florida State won, so the Seminoles could laugh. Wichita State enjoyed Andy Dirks' Bartman-like second-life home run even more. Steve Bartman is the Chicago Cubs fan made infamous when he innocently caught a foul ball that Cubs outfielder Moises Alou had a chance to grab in the 2003 National League Championship Series. The Cubs, up 3-0 against Florida, lost the game and the series. Bartman's name came up in the third inning Sunday. Dirks, with a 3-1 count, lofted a foul ball down the third-base line. Two Seminoles chased it, and third baseman Stuart Tapley had a shot. Until a glove shot over the fence. A man wearing a Florida State football jersey with a No. 4 on it grabbed the ball. The Seminoles protested. Dirks homered on the next pitch to cut FSU's lead to 6-2. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Capra gets ball in biggest test Sun, 08 Jun 2008 02:38 CDT Wichita State pitcher Anthony Capra knows how it looks. His performance dropped off in late April, just in time to raise questions about the draft messing with his mind. Capra, who will start today's deciding game in the Tallahassee Super Regional, doesn't think "draftitis" affected him. He struggled throwing strikes in recent starts, but it wasn't because he was trying to impress the scouts. "I know a lot of people probably say my mind was clouded," he said. "I really don't think it was. I think I went through a phase when things weren't working for me and I needed to make adjustments I didn't make." Capra, a lefty, will be challenged today by the heat and patient and potent hitters. WSU starter Rob Musgrave threw 120 pitches in 5 2/3 innings Friday. Aaron Shafer threw 85 in 2 2/3 innings on Saturday. Both are usually more economical with their pitches than Capra (9-0, 2.87 ERA). He has not lasted more than six innings since April 20 at Southern Illinois. Before that, he struck out nine or more in four of five outings and pitched at least seven innings in three of four. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Roles redefined in Tallahassee Sat, 07 Jun 2008 01:40 CDT Wichita State's pitching staff is usually run like a big-league operation with no surprises and defined roles. In a super regional, things can change, as junior Anthony Capra found out. He made his first relief appearance of the season in the ninth inning, inheriting a 2-0 count with the tying run at the plate. Capra, WSU's No. 3 starter all season, did not get much notice from pitching coach Brent Kemnitz for his role change. "Brent didn't really tell me anything was going on until the seventh inning," Capra said. "He said 'If it comes down to it, can you go in relief?' I said 'I'll do whatever you want.' " Capra warmed up in the seventh. When things got dicey in the ninth, he went back to work. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Like the odds? Sat, 07 Jun 2008 02:46 CDT The winner of Game 1 of the three-game NCAA super regional obviously has an advantage. Only 15 of 64 previous Game 1 losers have won the next two to advance to Omaha. A look at who made the two-game comeback that Florida State faces against WSU:

| Four Shockers drafted Fri, 06 Jun 2008 01:40 CDT A 4-for-5 night at the plate can disappoint Wichita State third baseman Conor Gillaspie. True to his hard-to-please nature, so can being the 37th player picked in the baseball draft. The San Francisco Giants grabbed Gillaspie in the first supplemental round, where teams who lose free agents are awarded draft picks. Strictly speaking, it is not the first round, but it's also before the second round. Gillaspie expected to go in the 30-pick first round. "I think once it settles in, he will be OK," WSU coach Gene Stephenson said. "His initial reaction was disappointment. Right now, the thing that is uppermost in his mind is he wants to get this team Omaha. He wants to play in the College World Series." Gillaspie declined to speak to the media Thursday night. Teammate Aaron Shafer, picked in the second round by the Chicago Cubs, understood Gillaspie's frustration. Entering the draft, Gillaspie was regarded as a potential first-round talent by some. Baseball America ranked him No. 23 in its pre-draft evaluation. "Conor's a guy that expects the best," Shafer said. "You can't ever really explain why certain people react the way they do when they have a certain standard for themselves. It's not a thing about ego or money. He wants to be appreciated a little bit. I don't disagree." | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Williams back in Shocker lineup Fri, 06 Jun 2008 01:39 CDT Kenny Williams grew up on the West Coast and played baseball in Arizona. The Florida heat and humidity isn't going to bother him. Williams, sidelined by mononucleosis for almost three weeks, is back as a starter in left field for the first time since May 4. With Florida State starting right-hander Elih Villanueva, Williams, a switch-hitter, gets the call. "It's very humid out here," he said. "It's just something we've got to adjust to, and I think we will." It should not be difficult for Williams to adjust to his return to the lineup. His confidence should be boosted by two plate appearances in Sunday's regional championship game at Oklahoma State. His pinch-hit double started a ninth-inning rally. His walk in the 10th contributed to the game-winning grand slam by Clinton McKeever. "I'm looking forward to the challenge," Williams said. "Florida State's a great team, but I think we've got something to prove." | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| GYMNASTICS Fri, 06 Jun 2008 01:39 CDT Reigning world champion Shawn Johnson showed she's still the one to beat Thursday night, taking a solid lead at the U.S. championships with a score of 63.450. Nastia Liukin, who is expected to challenge Johnson all the way through the Beijing Olympics, was second after posting a 17.05 on uneven bars that is the highest mark for an American woman -- on any event -- since gymnastics went to its new, open-ended scoring system two years ago. Former world champion Chellsie Memmel, finally healthy after a devastating shoulder injury two years ago, showed she's still a factor, finishing third. The finals are Saturday night, and the top 12 qualify for the Olympic trials June 19-22 in Philadelphia along with any gymnasts chosen by the selection committee. | FLORIDA STATE Fri, 06 Jun 2008 01:39 CDT THREE KEYS TO TWO WINS Find the Shocker bullpen Bucknell's Mathew Wilson showed that FSU's potent offense can be stopped last week in his regional shutout. So the Seminoles have to try to knock around WSU starters Rob Musgrave and Aaron Shafer and get to a bullpen in search of consistency. Solid starts FSU will go with its most solid starters in Games 1 (RH Elih Villanueva) and 2 (LH Matt Fairel). Unlike the Tallahassee Regional, where they piece-mealed their pitching playing in four straight elimination games, the Noles are hoping those two can eat innings and slow a Shocker team on a nine-game offensive roll. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| WICHITA STATE Fri, 06 Jun 2008 01:39 CDT THREE KEYS TO TWO WINS Starting off strong WSU is averaging 12 runs and 14 hits in its last nine games. That kind of pace can continue against No. 2 FSU only if table-setters Andy Dirks and Ryan Jones are on base for the meat of the order. Buster Posey, take your base We know opponents shouldn't pitch to WSU's Conor Gillaspie. This weekend, WSU shouldn't pitch to Posey, the FSU All-America catcher who hit five regional homers. He shouldn't get to swing at five hittable pitches against the Shockers. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| SIX PACK Fri, 06 Jun 2008 01:39 CDT Wichita State's history with Florida State is short and significant. Four meetings in Omaha headline the clashes. Today's game will be the first time they play on either campus. 1989 FSU 4, WSU 2 June 4, Omaha FSU pitcher Clyde Keller held the Shockers to four hits with his palmball. The Seminoles broke a 2-all tie in the seventh to send WSU into the losers bracket against Arkansas. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| HOW THEY MATCH UP Fri, 06 Jun 2008 01:40 CDT CATCHER Weber is good, but Posey may be the nation's best player. WSU should avoid him in the order. | Rookie Tseng wins LPGA Mon, 09 Jun 2008 01:43 CDT In her rookie year on the LPGA Tour, playing in only her third major championship, 19-year-old Yani Tseng felt lucky to become the youngest winner of the LPGA Championship on Sunday. After the day she had at Bulle Rock in Havre de Grace, Md., that was hardly the case. First, she went 18 holes with Lorena Ochoa and closed with a 4-under 68 in searing heat, denying the No. 1 player in women's golf a chance to win a third straight major. Then came a sudden-death playoff with Maria Hjorth that lasted four holes. Tseng finished it off by choking down on a 6-iron out of the first cut of rough and hitting the perfect shot, the ball stopping 5 feet behind the hole for a birdie that made her the first rookie to win an LPGA major in 10 years. "I can't believe I just won a major," Tseng said. "Everything is coming so fast." | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| Bishop, Sanders winKGA Fourball crown Sun, 08 Jun 2008 01:40 CDT Former Wichita State golfer Cameron Bishop and Shocker senior Ty Sanders won the Kansas Golf Association Fourball title on Saturday, defeating ex-Washburn golfers John Robbins and Ryan Deutsch 4 and 3 in the 36-hole final at Lawrence's Alvamar Golf Club. Bishop and Sanders, both Tulsa natives, claimed their first KGA titles after finishing second to former University of Kansas players Chad Roesler and Conrad Roberts in last year's final. It marked the second time in three years a WSU duo has won the title. Brandon Hermreck and Zac Potter, who lost to Robbins and Deutsch in Friday's quarterfinals, won the KGA Fourball in 2006. Sanders and Bishop were seeded 14th in the 32-team match-play bracket after two rounds of stroke-play qualifying. But they breezed through their first three matches, with none advancing past the 14th hole. Their closest match came in Friday's semifinals, when they rallied from an early deficit to edge another Shocker duo, Brad Boan and Spencer Christian, 2 and 1. Vautravers, Adamson lead city seniors -- Two-time defending champion Randy Vautravers and Gary Adamson shot 2-over-par 73s on Saturday to lead their respective divisions of the Wichita Golf Association senior and super senior tournament at Derby Country Club. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Ochoa slips tofourth at LPGA Sun, 08 Jun 2008 01:39 CDT Stifling heat that turned Bulle Rock into an oven cooked up quite a surprise Saturday in the McDonald's LPGA Championship -- a rare stumble by Lorena Ochoa, Annika Sorenstam in the hunt and a one-shot lead for Jee Young Lee. Lee, one of the longest hitters on the LPGA Tour, played her final four holes in 4-under par and surged into the lead with a 7-under 65 in the major at Havre de Grace, Md. She was a shot ahead of Maria Hjorth of Sweden, another big hitter, who did most of her work early and also shot 65. What looked like smooth sailing for Ochoa and her bid for a third straight major took a detour when she nearly whiffed on a wedge in the rough, went eight holes before making a birdie and had to rally for an even-par 72. Even so, she was only two shots behind and tied for third with Sorenstam, who shot a 68. It could have been a dream scenario at Bulle Rock with Sorenstam and Ochoa playing together in the second-to-last group. But LPGA officials, fearful of more fog that delayed the start of the third round, decided on threesomes for the final round. That puts Sorenstam in the final group with Lee and Hjorth, her best chance to win a major since she won the U.S. Women's Open at Newport two years ago. Sorenstam could tie the record with a fourth LPGA Championship, which would be even more meaningful because she has announced that she will retire at the end of the year. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Torrey Pines brings Open to SD Sun, 08 Jun 2008 01:39 CDT It might be the quintessential San Diego sporting experience, one that's as familiar to Lefty and Tiger as it is to the worst hacker who's ever set foot on the property. When golfers reach the par-3 third hole on the South Course at Torrey Pines, tony La Jolla is off to the left, the Pacific Ocean is straight ahead, and, more often than not, a hang glider is floating silently overhead. Out of sight down the bluffs, but certainly not out of everyone's mind, are people in the buff at Black's Beach. A salty sea breeze blows ashore. Sometimes, fog hugs the cliffs. "That's where you feel the elements, where you see the ocean," said Joe DeBock, the head pro at Torrey Pines. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| Bishop, Sanders in KGA final Sat, 07 Jun 2008 01:39 CDT Former Wichita State teammates Cameron Bishop and Ty Sanders won two matches at the Kansas Golf Association Fourball Championship on Friday to advance to the final for the second straight year. Bishop, who finished playing for the Shockers in 2007, and Sanders, a senior-to-be, will face ex-Washburn teammates John Robbins and Ryan Deutsch in today's 36-hole final at Lawrence's Alvamar Golf Club. Bishop and Sanders, who finished second last year, eliminated Keith Erickson and Michael Elafros 6 and 4 in the morning quarterfinals. They followed it with a 2-and-1 semifinal win over WSU golfers Brad Boan and Spencer Christian. Robbins and Deutsch, who recently finished their collegiate careers, reached the final with a 3-and-2 victory over stroke-play medalists Kyle Smell and Scott Willman. Topeka's Craig Colboch and Mark Elliott won the masters division for golfers 40 and older, defeating the top seeds, Gary Lucas and Mike Grosdidier, 1 up. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| Dixon wins thirdIRL race at Texas Sun, 08 Jun 2008 01:40 CDT Scott Dixon regained the lead a lap before a crash between his closest competitors and crossed the finish line under caution to win the IndyCar Series race at Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth. On the 222nd lap, Dixon drove under Marco Andretti coming out of the third turn to get in front. Near the same spot a lap later, Ryan Hunter-Reay was on the bottom of the 1 ½-mile, high-banked track trying to get past Andretti. But Hunter-Reay's car suddenly darted up into Andretti, sending both of them into the wall. It was the 13th career victory for Dixon, and third this season for the Indianapolis 500 champion and series points leader. Any concerns about running out of fuel were eliminated when Hunter-Reay and Andretti crashed. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
