| Cowley can't overcome its many errors Tue, 13 May 2008 01:38 CDT In a game that featured a runner missing third base on his way to the plate and six errors -- two on the same play that allowed a runner to circle the bases -- it figures that the ultimate difference came on a mistake. Johnson County scored three runs in the ninth inning, including the game-winner on a Connor Farris wild pitch to steal a 7-6 decision in the Region VI winners' bracket final at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium. Johnson County advances to tonight's championship game at 7 p.m. Cowley will play today at 4 p.m. against Kansas City for the right to face Johnson County. "We took advantage of some opportunities they gave us and we certainly feel very fortunate," Johnson County coach Kent Shelley said. "We committed three errors, and they were three uncharacteristic errors for us. We were able to overcome them, and against a good club like Cowley, sometime that's not possible." Cowley overcame many of its own miscues to break a 4-4 tie with two runs in the bottom of the eighth. The Tigers were aided by an error by center fielder Parker Amos, who dropped a fly ball to set up a two-run single by Tom O'Gorman. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| McKeever looks the part Tue, 13 May 2008 01:38 CDT Man In the middle Wichita State coaches long ago targeted Clinton McKeever as a player who could give the batting order pop and a physical presence. It took time, but McKeever is developing into that kind of player as his sophomore season enters its final weeks. Sunday, the Shocker who most looks like a cleanup hitter moved into that spot for the first time. "It's all about being comfortable and having confidence," he said. "As the season progressed, I've had more and more success. I've been able to keep things going." McKeever (6 foot 3, 245 pounds) locked down a regular spot in the batting order as the designated hitter in early April. By the end of the month, he took over at first base. In his past 15 games, he is hitting .379 with eight extra-base hits and 11 RBIs. He is one of the few Shockers on a hot streak as they play Oral Roberts tonight at Eck Stadium in their final regular-season non-conference game. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| WSU recruit finally gets visa Tue, 13 May 2008 01:38 CDT Wichita State basketball recruit Ehimen Orukpe has been granted a student visa by the U.S. Embassy in Nigeria, according to Rep. Todd Tiahrt. Tiahrt's office sent out a news release on Monday. WSU coach Gregg Marshall said he would have no comment. "Whatever their office released will stand for me," Marshall said. "We're not going to talk about it." Orukpe, a 7-foot center, signed a letter of intent with WSU in May 2007. He was not able to leave Nigeria. The granting of his visa is expected to clear the way for him to leave Nigeria and come to Wichita. "Today, my office was notified by the State Department in Washington that Ehimen Orukpe was granted a student visa by the U.S. Embassy in Nigeria," Tiahrt said in the release. "I wish him great success as he makes the journey to Wichita. I hope he receives a big Kansas welcome when he arrives." | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Shockers conquer rain, Aces Mon, 12 May 2008 01:38 CDT The rain delays lasted twice as long as the game. For Wichita State and left fielder Bret Bascue, the wait was worth every water-logged minute at Braun Stadium. No. 14 Wichita State routed Evansville 16-3 on Sunday to stay in control of its own destiny in the Missouri Valley Conference race. Bascue hit his first grand slam and drove in a career-high six runs to help the Shockers run-rule the Aces in seven innings. "It was absolutely very crucial," WSU coach Gene Stephenson said. "Fortunately for us, the rain held off. We leave here feeling a little bit better than we did earlier today." The Shockers (38-14, 16-5 MVC) spent most of Sunday waiting around in Evansville's field house, an old National Guard armory next to the stadium. They got to the stadium at noon for a scheduled 1 p.m. start and waited until 5 p.m. through rain and wind. Some players hit, some fielded, some threw and some slept. Whatever the strategy, they were ready when the game started. The Shockers took a 9-0 lead in the first inning and all that remained was a weather watch. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| 'I don't give up that easy' Sun, 11 May 2008 06:00 CDT Curtis Dolezal is adept at reading the looks on other's faces when they see his stub of a right arm. Dolezal (doh-LEE-zul) sees the pity and sympathy in adults and other teenagers. He sees the curiosity in children who want to know how it happened and why his right arm extends only to his elbow. And he wonders what he should say. Should he explain how, when he was 3 years old, his own curiosity got the best of him and he stuck his arm down into where his parents' hired hand was binning wheat? Should Dolezal tell how his arm hung limply by his side after his mother, Dawn, frantically tried to pull him free from the grain auger -- which moves the grain with a spinning blade -- injuring herself in the process? And should he explain that amputation was the only option because pretty much all that remained of his lower right arm was the bone? The questions, sympathy -- that's all fine. He understands. Just don't underestimate him. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Craine, Wadsworth win River Run 10K races Sun, 11 May 2008 06:02 CDT Growing up around Wichita, Cindy Craine always knew about the River Run. But Craine, a Mulvane High and Butler Community College graduate, was never a long distance runner looking to run in a 10K race. Years later, after graduating from Texas Christian University and settling in Fort Worth, Craine decided it was worth a trip back home. "I'm always looking for an excuse to visit family," she said. Running in only her second 10K and first race back in Wichita, Craine made the most of the return, crossing the finish line at Douglas and Broadway in 36:21 to win the female division of the 32nd Annual Bank of America River Run 10K Saturday morning. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Second run gives Dixon Indy 500 pole Sun, 11 May 2008 01:43 CDT Strategy was almost as important as speed Saturday as Scott Dixon won the pole for the Indianapolis 500 with a big gamble by his Target Chip Ganassi Racing team. Dixon and teammate Dan Wheldon, who took the second spot, both took advantage of Indy's unique qualifying format, which allows each entry up to three tries on each of the four days of time trials. Dixon, who has three pole positions in five tries in the IRL IndyCar Series this season, got the biggest benefit of the team strategy, canceling out a four-lap average of 225.178 mph earlier in the day and making it pay off with four laps at 226.366 that held up for Ganassi's third Indy pole. "I was part of that decision, so it wasn't really a surprise," Dixon said. "We had been out testing, so we were confident we could go much faster. The tough part came later in the day, knowing whether or not we should do a third attempt (if we got knocked off the pole). "One thing that was great out there, even on an average lap for us, we still had the field covered as a team. That just goes to show how strong we are this year." | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Last-place Aces stymie Shockers Sun, 11 May 2008 01:43 CDT Evansville's eight runs Friday night didn't just spoil Wichita State's run-rule hopes. They gave the downtrodden Aces hope they could hang with the 14th-ranked Shockers. So if a team can find a little juice in a 15-8 loss, the Aces did so. Saturday, they stunned the Shockers with a 6-3 victory behind junior right-hander John Foley's three-hitter at Braun Stadium. "Giving us a chance and giving us momentum, that really helps us," Foley said. "Being able to put up runs (Friday) after we were down really played into today." WSU (37-14, 15-5 Missouri Valley Conference) lost all margin for error in the conference race. The Shockers must win their remaining four games to ensure themselves at least a tie for first place with Missouri State. Saturday's effort led to a 13-minute meeting in right field. Coach Gene Stephenson had plenty to talk about. The Shockers committed two errors that led to four unearned runs. Starting pitcher Aaron Shafer gave up nine hits and three straight two-out hits after an error in the crucial fifth inning. WSU didn't record a hit until the sixth inning and didn't put a runner on base after the sixth. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Unknown takes lead at TPC Sun, 11 May 2008 01:43 CDT Paul Goydos doesn't have a Q-rating, an endorsement deal or a top-30 finish in the last 16 months. What he does have for the first time in his career is a 54-hole lead -- in The Players Championship, no less. Seemingly immune to the mounting pressure and a course getting tougher by the day, Goydos seized the lead Saturday with a 10-foot birdie on the island-green 17th and a great escape on the closing hole for a 2-under 70 and a one-shot lead over Kenny Perry in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla. As well as he played, his self-deprecating humor was even better. Asked if he had ever had a 54-hole lead on the PGA Tour, Goydos shook his head. "But I've only been on tour for 16 years," he said. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Keller, Torneden win 2-mile races Sun, 11 May 2008 01:38 CDT The previous four times David Keller ran the two-mile race at the River Run, the preparation was the same. He didn't put much focus on the race, opting to run in the 10-kilometer run earlier in the morning before running the two-mile about an hour later. But this year, Keller decided to change things up. He sat out the 10K, saving his stamina for the 32nd Annual River Run two-mile race Saturday morning. The strategy worked. Keller made a late break for the lead, passing Fernando Martinez with a quarter of a mile remaining, to win his second two-mile race. Martinez, the Bishop Carroll cross country coach, finished second. "I didn't expect to win it today," Keller said. "Usually I run a (10K) and then I come and run this race. That's what I did last year and I got third. That... always takes a little bit out of you. I think I was just fresh this year." | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Without Franzen, Detroit tops Stars Sun, 11 May 2008 01:38 CDT The Detroit Red Wings kept rolling without their hottest player. Darren Helm and Henrik Zetterberg scored first-period goals to help make up for the loss of Johan Franzen and Detroit held on for a 2-1 win Saturday night over the Dallas Stars and a 2-0 lead in the Western Conference finals. Stephane Robidas tied it at 1 midway through the first period, but the Stars struggled to get shots to or past Chris Osgood. Dallas' Marty Turco made 32 saves, but the former University of Michigan star fell to 0-9-2 in the NHL at Joe Louis Arena. Osgood needed to stop just 17 shots, improving to 8-0 as a starter in the playoffs this season. Game 3 is Monday night in Dallas. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Cleveland's Cabreraturns solo triple play Tue, 13 May 2008 01:43 CDT Asdrubal Cabrera turned the 14th unassisted triple play in major league history, and it wasn't enough for the Cleveland Indians to complete a doubleheader sweep. Shannon Stewart hit a sacrifice fly in the 10th inning, Aaron Hill added a two-run single and the Toronto Blue Jays beat Cleveland 3-0 on Monday night to salvage a split of the doubleheader. The nightcap featured terrific pitching performances from Toronto's Shawn Marcum and Cleveland's Cliff Lee, who got a big assist from Cabrera in the fifth inning. With Kevin Mench and Marco Scutaro on with singles, Cabrera made a diving backhand catch of a line drive by Lyle Overbay, touched second base to force Mench and then tagged out Scutaro. Colorado shortstop Troy Tulowitzki made the last unassisted triple play in the majors, on April 29, 2007, against Atlanta. | Five minutes, three Eagles Tue, 13 May 2008 02:43 CDT Eagle high school reporters talk to area athletes about their school, their sport and teen life. Today, it's Maize High. Three Eagles softball players -- Kayla Becker, Taylor Funk and Courtney White -- took a few moments between games to answer some questions. Is it tougher hitting a softball than a baseball? Becker: "It depends. I used to play baseball, and it comes at a different angle. Some say it's easier to hit a softball because it's bigger. No, it's just different." Funk: "I would say yes. A, the pitcher is closer to you and B, baseballs are so little, they can just fly. Softball's a little heavier. and really, in reality, the softball is coming just as fast as a baseball is because of the distance. And boys need to quit saying that it's easier to hit a softball because they're completely wrong." | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| AMERICAN LEAGUE Mon, 12 May 2008 01:43 CDT Rays 8, Angels 5 -- Carl Crawford hit a three-run homer and Cliff Floyd added a pair of run-scoring singles, helping the Tampa Bay stop Ervin Santana from becoming the AL's first seven-game winner. Santana departed with a 5-4 lead with one runner on and two outs in the sixth inning, but the game quickly shifted when Justin Speier (0-3) entered and gave up a double to Akinori Iwamura and Crawford's third homer of the season.... B.J. Upton doubled for the third consecutive hit off the Angels reliever. He took third base on a wild pitch and scored on another wild pitch by Speier, who struggled for the second time in three days against the Rays. Athletics 12, Rangers 6 -- Emil Brown hit a three-run homer and drove in four runs to help the Athletics beat Texas, ending the Rangers' season-best five-game winning streak Sunday. Frank Thomas drove in two runs to give him 1,695 RBIs, tying him with Cal Ripken for 21st all-time.... Ian Kinsler had three hits for the Rangers, who had won nine of their previous 11. Mariners 6, White Sox 3 -- Raul Ibanez hit a two-run homer in the third inning, and the Mariners beat the White Sox to snap a five-game losing streak. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Alvarez shows smarts, boosts stock at Vandy Sun, 11 May 2008 01:43 CDT Pedro Alvarez has a date every night. Even if busy with dinner, he grabs his cell phone, puts the speaker on, props it on his shoulder and talks away for about 30 minutes -- with his father, a cab driver in New York. That's how the Vanderbilt junior third baseman stays in touch with his family. That closeness is why the talented third baseman turned down a big offer from the Boston Red Sox coming out of high school and headed off to college. A tough decision for a fan of Boston's Manny Ramirez and David Ortiz. But to Alvarez and his family, education comes first. "You've got to set foot on the ground and be realistic and see things for what they are. At the time, it just wasn't our path to follow," Alvarez said as he leaned against the dugout rail before a recent game. "I thought this was the place I could get the best of both worlds." | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| Sexson's suspension reduced to 5 games Sun, 11 May 2008 01:43 CDT Richie Sexson's suspension for charging the mound in Seattle's 5-0 loss to Texas on Thursday was reduced from six games to five. Sexson began the suspension with Saturday night's game against the Chicago White Sox. He will miss the final two games of the series against the White Sox, and all three games Monday through Wednesday against the Rangers in Texas. Sexson charged the mound and flung his helmet at Kason Gabbard after the left-hander threw an eye-high pitch to him that was more over the plate than inside in the fourth inning of Thursday night's game. Sexson appealed the suspension, and Major League Baseball and Mariners officials held a conference-call hearing Saturday. "It's acceptable for what happened," Sexson said. | Gates stars as Wingnuts get road split Mon, 12 May 2008 01:38 CDT David Gates hit a double and a home run and drove in four runs, helping the Wingnuts beat Sioux City 10-6 and earn a split of a doubleheader Sunday in Sioux City, Iowa. Wichita pounded out 15 hits in the seven-inning game, and built an 8-0 lead after 3 ½ innings. Heath Keel had three RBIs to aid the attack. Lack of timely hitting hurt the Wingnuts as they dropped the opener 2-1 -- Wichita left 10 men on base. Wingnuts starting pitcher Gustavo Mata threw a complete game. Notes -- Wichita has today off, then begins a three-game series on Tuesday in El Paso.... The Wingnuts also traded infielder Brandon Carter to the Grand Prairie Airhogs for future considerations today and activated pitcher Ronnie Ball. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Wingnuts are thrilled with attendance so far Sun, 11 May 2008 06:29 CDT Last season, the St. Paul Saints led the American Association in attendance, averaging 6,205 fans for its 48 home dates. It has been two days, but the Wingnuts are averaging 6,326 fans. That pace isn't expected to be kept up, but it's a better start than even the team expected. And it's evidence that getting fans to come watch baseball at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium is possible. The now-departed Wranglers finished last in the Texas League in attendance from 2003-07, a major reason the team relocated to Arkansas. "The first thing I've got to say is thanks to the city of Wichita for coming out and supporting us like that," manager Kash Beauchamp said after the team's first game on Thursday, which drew 5,874 fans. "That was incredible, and we're really appreciative of the fans." The Wingnuts have taken advantage of prime high-attendance opportunities. Fans curious to see the inaugural game packed Lawrence-Dumont on Thursday, and the start of the River Festival made for a happening downtown on Friday night. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

WSU defeated the Golden Eagles 10-8 on April 2 at Eck Stadium. Rain cancelled an earlier meeting in Tulsa. WSU's Tyler Weber and Dusty Coleman both drove in two runs with two hits. RP Khol Nanney threw three scoreless innings. ORU's Kelly Minissale drove in three runs with a double and went five innings as the starting pitcher. ORU clinched its 10th straight Summit League title with a doubleheader sweep of Oakland on Saturday. The Golden Eagles have won four straight games since losing a 12-8 decision at South Dakota State. LF Brian Van Kirk leads ORU with a .502 on-base percentage, a .411 batting average and a .716 slugging percentage. He has 13 home runs, 19 doubles and 56 RBIs. | Andy Dirks challenges his teammates to perform Sun, 11 May 2008 01:43 CDT Wednesday's 6-1 loss to No. 3 Arizona State inspired Wichita State senior Andy Dirks to write. Dirks watched the Shockers fail to move runners, fail to adjust to a freshman pitcher making his first start and fail to support a solid pitching effort. After the game, he sat down at a computer and banged out a three-page report discussing the need to be prepared, make adjustments and take better advantage of WSU's skills. "We haven't been putting up runs," Dirks said. "It was something I wrote for the team to kind of reflect on what we've been doing and what we needed to better stuff. I just decided to type it up on a piece of paper and give it to everybody." WSU coach Gene Stephenson can't recall another player taking that kind of step in his 31 seasons as coach. Dirks' reputation as one of the program's finest leaders took another leap forward. "It's priceless," Stephenson said. | North takes aim on state drought Mon, 12 May 2008 01:38 CDT The North golf team hasn't been to a state tournament since 1984. This year the Redskins may have the players to make the drought come to an end. Led by Kyle Wright, North finished fourth at the City League tournament with a 335. North's main challengers at today's regional at Consolver Golf Course should be Dodge City, Goddard, Maize and Northwest. The top three finishers will qualify for the state meet. "This is the best team I've had since I started here," North coach Scott Baxter said. "But things have to fall into place. Even though we played well last week at city, I still don't think we've played our best." Across town, MacDonald Park Southeast will aim for a return trip to state. The Buffaloes shot a 312 last week at the CL meet, which was good enough for a second-place finish. Grant Burnside, Cody Stuber and Taylor Salome all shot sub-80 scores. "If we shoot a 312 again, I think we'll have a chance," Southeast coach Geoff Martens said. "But there are a lot of good teams in it -- Washburn Rural and Manhattan are really good." | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Collegiate wins another tennis title Sun, 11 May 2008 06:23 CDT Wichita Collegiate tennis coach Dave Hawley's tenure has been packed with success, winning 15 boys titles from 1988-2006. But as the championship matches of the Class 3-2-1A tournament started Saturday at Wichita State, Hawley was especially emotional. Collegiate's doubles teams of Miles Dunne-Brandon Somerhalder and Paul Abromeit-Wyatt Kesler were set to play in the championship match, which meant Collegiate had won yet another team title. "This team, they're very special because they were uncoached by me for part of the year," said Hawley, who spent two weeks of the season in St. Louis with his dad, who died on April 15."... I've liked all my teams, but this team, even if they hadn't won it, would be very, very special." Hawley, whose team scored 38 points to edge second place Conway Springs (34 points), credited his players and assistants Jeff Nordgren and Janet Glaser. "Right in the beginning, about the first week of the season, (Hawley) came in and said that things were going poorly with his dad," Nordgren said."... I could just see the faces of the kids. They love Dave so much.... They played well in the tournaments, and I think it's inspired by how much they care about him." | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Dippel, Hesston duo capture 4A state titles Sun, 11 May 2008 01:43 CDT Chase Dippel is quick to note that basketball is his sport of choice. But Dippel, a Smoky Valley junior, might have a new legacy to fulfill after breezing through the final two rounds of the Class 4A tournament. With a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Santiago Padilla of Kansas City Piper on Saturday, Dippel became the third Smoky Valley tennis player to win a state singles tournament. He's the first to do so since 1972. Dippel finished fourth in 2007, and was happy to make the climb to the top. "I knew there was going to be a lot of pressure on me being the highest returning placer from last year," Dippel said. "It's just a great feeling to win." Hesston doubles team takes first -- Hesston finished second (22 points) in the team competition behind first-place Independence (34 points) on the strength of a first-place doubles finish from Brett Liechty and Alex Roth. "Our guys came in here with clear minds, they remained focused and took care of business," Hesston coach Mark Dahlston said. "We wanted to bring home team hardware, and we won five of six matches on Saturday to make sure that happened." | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Goddard takes fourth place in Class 6A Sun, 11 May 2008 01:43 CDT Steady progression. That's what Goddard coach John Markham thinks of his boys tennis team's six-year stint in Class 6A. After winning the team title in Class 5A in 2002, the Lions found themselves back in somewhat familiar territory since moving up a class, finishing fourth with 15 points in the 6A tournament Saturday at Goddard. Shawnee Mission East won the team title with 38 points while Blue Valley North finished second with 32 points. Defending champion Washburn Rural rounded out the top three with 16 points. "We exceeded our expectations," Markham said. "All season we had been ranked around sixth in the coaches poll. So I don't think anyone expected us to get a fourth-place finish." | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Salina Central wins fifth straight Sun, 11 May 2008 01:43 CDT Salina Central tennis coach Jim LoVullo is no stranger to winning. That doesn't mean he ever gets tired of it, though. His Mustangs cruised to their fifth consecutive Class 5A championship Saturday at Riverside Tennis Center. LoVullo was an assistant on the 2004 championship team, and has been the head coach for the past four titles. "They're just all incredible performers," LoVullo said. "I had goosebumps watching these kids out here today." | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Track Honor Roll May 11 Sun, 11 May 2008 06:23 CDT The Eagle track honor roll lists the top three times, distances and heights, regardless of class. Then the remaining class leaders, not covered in the top three, are listed. Even if a team goes to an out-of-town meet, it is the responsibility of coaches to report statistics (1-800-825-NEWS or 268-6252.) One may also e-mail results to stats@varsitykansas.com. This form is online at VarsityKansas.com. The Eagle thanks Carol Swenson for his assistance in compiling this honor roll.
