Daniel Edwards didn't take much notice as the song blared through Eck Stadium, even though it was his. As the Kansas State closer made his way from the visitors' bullpen in the eighth inning Tuesday night against No. 14 Wichita State, Korn's "Coming Undone" blared through the loudspeakers. The otherwise unexceptional song is played every time Edwards enters a game at Tointon Family Stadium in Manhattan.

"It was probably a coincidence thing," Edwards said.

Five outs later, all coincidences included, it was K-State's night.

Edwards preserved the 3-2 victory by striking out three of the six Shockers he faced, including Andy Dirks with a runner in scoring position for the final out.

"As long we can come out on top in these types of games, it will be better for us," Edwards said.

When your high-school basketball teams is loaded with major-college recruits, it can be a little hard to stand out.

At least that's what guard Tyshawn Taylor discovered during his first two years at renowned St. Anthony High in Jersey City, N.J.

"I was in the shadow of my teammates for a long time," he said Tuesday after giving an oral commitment to Kansas.

But you can keep the cream down only so long. That's also what Taylor discovered after he performed at a high level last summer during AAU competition and camps.

"His game really blew up last summer," St. Anthony coach Bob Hurley said. "He really improved his game, and that's when everyone really started looking at him."

Manny Ramirez looped a single to center, sending Ortiz to second, and Youkilis hit a ball in front of center fielder Vernon Wells that he couldn't handle.... Jonathan Papelbon (1-0) retired the side in the ninth, but a spectacular diving play by second baseman Dustin Pedroia saved a run from scoring.

Orioles 7, Rays 4 -- Garrett Olson took a shutout into the seventh inning, and Baltimore ended Tampa Bay's six-game winning streak in a surprising duel for first place in the AL East.

• Aubrey Huff homered and Melvin Mora had two RBIs for the Orioles.... Recalled from Triple-A Norfolk before the game, Olson (1-0) gave up two runs and four hits in 6 2/3 innings, walking five and striking out six.

Tigers 6, Yankees 4 -- Gary Sheffield and Curtis Granderson homered in the third inning, helping old pro Kenny Rogers and Detroit beat road-weary New York.

A hearing seeking a protection-from-stalking order against Wichita State baseball coach Gene Stephenson has been postponed from Thursday to an undetermined date.

A Sedgwick County District Court judge will meet with lawyers next month to schedule a hearing and other matters related to the case.

Stephenson, WSU's baseball coach since 1978, has been accused by a Wichita woman of harassing her numerous times in 2007. Stephenson has denied the allegation.

A temporary order was granted to the woman March 27.

Lying with her back on the ground, Northwest's Erin Widrig appeared to be finished for Tuesday night's matchup against Manhattan.

Minutes passed with Widrig on her back after a collision with goalkeeper Amanda Shook, until the junior was helped off the field by two coaches. It looked as if Northwest would have to protect its two-goal lead without its top defender for the final seven minutes.

But after watching Manhattan split through the defense and score a goal, Widrig shook off the pain in her hip to return to the field for the final five minutes. The Grizzlies held on for the 2-1 victory.

"I did not want them to finish the game with anything that would not get by me," Widrig said. "I didn't want to have to leave my team like that. I just wanted to finish the game."

When Widrig left, Manhattan was finally able to penetrate the Grizzlies' defense and cut the deficit in half with 2:22 remaining on a goal from Mallorie Blanck.

The North Redskins have a philosophy that good starts equal great finishes.

That strategy worked for them Tuesday as the Redskins defeated Bishop Carroll 9-0 at McAdams Field behind an early offensive explosion and pitching consistency.

With first place in the City League standings on the line, North (14-1 overall, 13-1 league) got a spectacular outing from ace Matt Applegate, stifling the Golden Eagle hitters.

Applegate spotted his fastball early and had plenty of movement on his curveball, finishing the game giving up four hits and striking out 10.

"I got ahead early and that allowed me to be effective later," said Applegate. "I was glad to be the guy out there. My team has confidence in me, and I build off of them."

Northwest's boys tennis team is young, to say the least. With no seniors and a core of sophomores leading the team, many other teams might be rebuilding.

Not the Grizzlies.

Northwest quietly finished third (6-2) in the City League this season after finishing fifth a year ago.

Northwest goes into Thursday's Class 6A regional at Dodge City with plenty of hope for this postseason and beyond.

"I'm thinking at the least, maybe we can get a doubles team qualified for state," coach Mike Thomas said.

Shaeffer Hall held Missouri scoreless for seven innings and Paul Smyth finished off the shutout as Kansas upset No. 15 Missouri 3-0 at Kauffman Stadium on Tuesday.

Hall (3-2) gave up five hits with four strikeouts and two walks to earn the win, the Jayhawks' first over a ranked opponent.

Ryne Price hit his 10th home run in the top of the second inning for Kansas (26-22). The Jayhawks added two insurance runs in the eighth on a two-RBI single by John Allman, who went 3 for 4.

Wichita Independent senior Callie Kemmer, the two-time Class 4-3-2-1A girls individual champion, will play collegiately at Yale, coach Chawwadee Rompothong said.

Evgeni Malkin scored two power-play goals and added an assist to lift Pittsburgh to a 5-3 victory Tuesday night over the host New York Rangers that stretched the Penguins' lead in the Eastern Conference semifinal series to 3-0.

The Penguins are 7-0 in the postseason, still rolling after a four-game sweep of Ottawa in the first round.

Pittsburgh, which lost all four road meetings with the Rangers this season, can advance to the Eastern Conference finals for the first time since 2001 as early as Thursday. Only two teams have come back to win a series after trailing 3-0.

New York, which dominated the shots with a 39-17 edge, had the stirring rally in this one, erasing a two-goal deficit in the second period. But Malkin restored the Penguins' lead before the frame was finished, then won a key faceoff in the Rangers' end that helped set up Ryan Malone's goal that made it 5-3 at 2:30 of the third.

Marian Hossa, Georges Laraque and Malkin scored for Pittsburgh around a goal by New York's Martin Straka in the first period.

I'm back after catching the first weekend of the Tribeca Film Festival in New York City, and I'm exhausted. As with many festivals, you spend long periods of time standing in line to get tickets or to get into screenings, or both. As one festivalgoer said to me, "If your feet don't hurt at the end of the day, you're not doing it right."

If my feet were any indication, I was a pro.

But waiting is part of the fun. It puts you right in the middle of the excitement and the spectacle. Still, the films are the reason to endure it all.

Here are the six movies I was able to see:

• "Somers Town" is director Shane Meadows' study of two unlikely teenage friends -- one homeless, one living with his alcoholic father -- in London. Meadows explained in the Q&A after the screening that the film was originally intended to be a short, but then was stretched to 70 minutes -- and it felt like it.

Martin, 28, has been the head bouncer at America's Pub for the past year and loves it. She leads a team of seven bouncers -- all men.

The Winfield native has a degree in criminal justice from Wichita State University and is working on a finance degree. She hopes one day to work for a large corporation.

1. How did you become head bouncer? My managers offered me the position after the previous head bouncer quit. I had been working the longest out of all the other bouncers at that time. I knew exactly what was expected, and the managers trusted that I would get the job done.

2. What made you want to get your degree in criminal justice?

My older sister received her degree in criminal justice and was a sheriff's officer for Cowley County for a few years. She is the one who sparked my interest in the career. I knew I did not want to do police work or become a lawyer, but after researching I found that a degree in criminal justice offered several different avenues to pursue.
