| WSU hitters tee off on fastball Sat, 19 Apr 2008 01:40 CDT All the scouts behind home plate came to see Southern Illinois right-hander Cody Adams throw fastballs. That's exactly what he did, and it thrilled Wichita State hitters. The seventh-ranked Shockers knocked Adams out with a seven-run third inning on their way to a 10-0 run-rule victory on Friday at Eck Stadium. "It feels great to finally see a 90 mph fastball again," WSU right fielder Ryan Jones said. "We love hitting that fastball. He throws it 94 and he wasn't spotting it too well today." The Shockers (29-6, 8-2 Missouri Valley Conference) needed only eight hits -- all singles -- to end the game after seven innings. They bunched their hits together and stole a season-high nine bases, three by Jones, to turn the game into a rout early. "We made the most of the third inning, I'll say that," WSU coach Gene Stephenson said. "We had some good at-bats and we ran the bases well." Stephenson liked the offense. He loved starting pitcher Rob Musgrave's performance. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Steaks high at K-State Sat, 19 Apr 2008 01:41 CDT Steak for the winners, bologna for the losers. Dinner is at stake today in Kansas State's Purple-White Game, which is set to begin at 6:30 p.m. In the long term, however, it's an opportunity, as star quarterback Josh Freeman said Thursday, to see how the newcomers adjust and find out what can be expected. Nevertheless, it's an event, the first time these Wildcats will be unveiled to the public and competing under the bright lights at Snyder Family Stadium. Ron Prince can't wait. "I know we've had a productive spring," he said. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Hurdler aims high at Relays Sat, 19 Apr 2008 01:41 CDT Bershawn "Batman" Jackson is on a mission today at the Kansas Relays. That might seem a little odd, considering he ranks fifth in the world in the 400-meter hurdles. Usually stars at that level don't come to the Relays to prove anything, particularly during an Olympic year. But after crashing into the final hurdle at the 2004 Olympic Trials and again at the 2007 World Championships, Jackson said, "I need to make a statement. I need to let everyone know I'm back." This will be the first outdoor meet of the season for Jackson, who will compete in the 400 hurdles at Memorial Stadium at about 4:30 this afternoon. He is a three-time Relays champion and holds the meet mark at 48.34 seconds. "I'm going to try for a world best," the 24-year-old Jackson said, well aware that the top mark in the world this year is 48.8. "But mostly I just want a good performance, to get off to a good start in preparing for the Olympic Trials. If I perform well, my time will be good enough." | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Rush, Arthur will go Fri, 18 Apr 2008 01:41 CDT There's no turning back now for Brandon Rush, but Darrell Arthur is keeping his options open. The worst kept secret of Kansas' national-championship basketball season became official Thursday when Rush and Arthur announced they have declared for the NBA Draft. "We all knew this day was coming," said KU coach Bill Self, who may need to replace up to eight players next season. "I'm excited for the opportunities that present themselves for each of these two." Those opportunities just look a little different right now. Rush is at the point of no return from a college standpoint, because the 6-foot-6 junior entered last year's draft before pulling out because of a knee injury. The NCAA allows a player to declare for the draft and withdraw only once in his career. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| WSU's Musgrave mixes it up Fri, 18 Apr 2008 02:49 CDT Beneath the guise of crafty left-hander, excellent student and mature team leader hides Rob Musgrave's lighter side. His Wichita State baseball teammates knew Musgrave possessed an off-the-wall component to his personality. Everybody else found out when Musgrave stole (and quickly returned) a bike and provoked a teammate to smash a chair in the locker room before a game. First baseman Tyler Hill published his account of the drama in his weekly "From the Hill" on goshockers.com. It was all in fun, although one Shocker couldn't laugh about it until later. "Rob's a different guy," senior pitcher Khol Nanney said. "He's real quiet to some. He's got a totally different side that a lot of people don't know about." Musgrave, even if he lightens up in the locker room, isn't known as a prankster. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| K-State dials up intensity Fri, 18 Apr 2008 01:41 CDT The question was whether this, the present state of Kansas State football, is where Ron Prince anticipated his program being at the start of his third season. He cut the question short. "Yes," he said Thursday. "Exactly.... I expected us to be where we are, right as planned. We'd like to have won more games -- obviously -- and we expect to win them all this fall." Think that's pressure, especially for a group of Wildcats that limped through a winless November to finish with a 5-7 record? That's nothing. Try being a Wildcat this spring. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Jamaican sprinter flourishes at Kansas Fri, 18 Apr 2008 01:41 CDT As recently as a year ago, Kansas sprinter Nickesha Anderson was training on a rented high-school track and doing indoor workouts on a basketball court. Today, she is one of the world's fastest sprinters. But then, she's Jamaican. And just about every Jamaican girl or boy who likes to run at all knows about the country's Queen of Track, Merlene Ottey. "You look at Merlene and you know anything is possible," Anderson said. Ottey is a 14-time world champion, seven-time Olympian. She's still competing at age 47, though it's now for her adopted country of Slovenia. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| WSU women after another title Thu, 17 Apr 2008 03:05 CDT If the Wichita State women's bowling team is looking for a challenge, it might not find one even in vying for a national championship this weekend. Everything the Shockers have done this season has a been-there-done-that feel. Dominate the regular season? Check. Achieve a No. 1 national ranking? Check. Enter the Intercollegiate Bowling Championships as the favorite with a chance to bring WSU's outstanding bowling program another national title? Check. The Shocker women and men will compete at Northrock Lanes in the three-day tournament starting today. The women are the defending champions and will aim for their third title in four years. "We've actually done a lot of the same things because we had so much success last year," senior Emily Maier said. "We've been trying to make it better, just build on that camaraderie and chemistry. "When we focus on getting better as individuals, we can get better as a team." | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| K-State's Martin signs deal Thu, 17 Apr 2008 03:20 CDT It only took 376 days, but Frank Martin finally signed his Kansas State basketball coaching contract Wednesday. Martin, who just completed his first season as the Wildcats' coach, has a five-year deal worth $760,000 per year, including a base salary of $180,000. With the first season complete, the contract ends after the 2011-12 season. "Frank and his staff have done a tremendous job of elevating our men's basketball program into one of the best in both the Big 12 and in the nation," K-State athletic director Bob Krause said in a statement. The contract is similar to the pact inked by his predecessor at K-State, Bob Huggins. But there is one paragraph that is vastly different, under the heading "termination." It states K-State can fire Martin at any time -- without cause -- as long as the university pays him $1,000,000 if the termination happens before April 30, 2009. The sum drops each succeeding year -- $750,000 by 2010, $500,000 by 2011 and $250,000 by 2012. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Shockers sign juco standout Thu, 17 Apr 2008 03:05 CDT Seward County Community College guard Reggie Chamberlain signed a letter of intent with Wichita State on Wednesday. Chamberlain (6-foot, 185 pounds), from Kansas City, Mo., averaged 14.5 points and 4.6 assists as a freshman at Seward. The Saints finished third in the NJCAA Tournament. "Reggie is a winner," WSU coach Gregg Marshall said in a release. "He continued to play better as a freshman at Seward, and rose to the top of our list of point guards. He takes care of the ball, distributes the ball and scores when the opportunity presents itself." He will have three seasons of eligibility at WSU. He was an All-Class 5 selection at Raytown High, where he averaged 20 points and six assists as a senior. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| AMERICAN LEAGUE Sat, 19 Apr 2008 01:41 CDT Red Sox 11, Rangers 3 -- Slumping David Ortiz hit a grand slam, and Daisuke Matsuzaka stayed unbeaten for Boston. Dustin Pedroia hit his first homer, a two-run shot that capped Boston's five-run fourth inning.... The Red Sox won for the sixth time in seven games.... Ortiz entered the game hitting just .111, the lowest of any regular in the majors. Orioles 8, Yankees 2 _ Jay Payton and Melvin Mora had two RBIs apiece in a seven-run sixth inning, Daniel Cabrera took a four-hitter into the seventh and Baltimore beat New York. Cabrera and Phil Hughes were locked in a 1-1 duel before the Orioles sent 11 men to the plate in their most productive inning of the season. Baltimore got seven hits, all of them singles, against three pitchers. Indians 4, Twins 0 _ Cliff Lee pitched two-hit ball for eight innings, Casey Blake homered and had three RBIs, and Cleveland beat Francisco Liriano and the Twins. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Cabrera, Tigersroll past Indians Thu, 17 Apr 2008 01:41 CDT Perhaps Jim Leyland's most crucial oration of recent days wasn't his clubhouse tirade in Chicago. Maybe it was the quiet talk Monday in which he told Miguel Cabrera to relax and be himself. At that point, Cabrera had two RBIs in the season's first two weeks, and he'd said the day before he was embarrassed by how he was playing. But now Cabrera has eight RBI in the three games since his talk with his manager. He drove in the first five runs of the Tigers' 13-2 romp over Cleveland on Wednesday night. Recalling his talk with Cabrera, Leyland said, "I didn't want him worrying about having to carry the team and justify his new contract. I told him, 'Don't worry about anything. Just go play the game and have fun.' "He looks a little more relaxed now." | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Oklahoma State settles on Ford Thu, 17 Apr 2008 01:41 CDT Travis Ford replaced Sean Sutton when the two were still playing college basketball. He'll do it again in the coaching profession. Ford agreed Wednesday to leave his job as Massachusetts' coach to take over Sutton's old position at Oklahoma State. A news conference is planned in Stillwater today to formally introduce him. In a twist of fate, Ford has been in a position to follow Sutton once before. After growing up in Kentucky, Ford ended up leaving the state to start his college career when the coach seemed headed toward playing his son at the point guard position. Kentucky's coach at the time? Eddie Sutton. And his point guard? His son, Sean. So Ford headed to Missouri for his first season, but then ended up transferring back home after Eddie Sutton ran into trouble with NCAA violations and alcoholism and was forced out at Kentucky. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| WSU teams reach semis Sat, 19 Apr 2008 01:40 CDT When Wichita State women's bowling coach Mark Lewis gathered his team for an in-game huddle on Friday, it appeared the Shockers were in for a pep talk about staying mentally strong. That wasn't it, though. Lewis saw his players becoming discouraged by some of their shots and helped them get a better feel for lane conditions. Though the Shockers didn't win that first game of a seven-game series against Purdue, the Shockers responded to Lewis' chat and won the quarterfinal match of the USBC Intercollegiate Team Championships in seven games. "In the first game, how the lanes played was a little different and everybody was not seeing that," Lewis said. "We made a little change to match up with that." The Shockers advance to today's semifinals at 9 a.m. as the only undefeated team and will meet Morehead State. Pikeville will play Maryland-Eastern Shore in the other semifinal.WSU's men's team lost its quarterfinal match to Saginaw Valley State but rebounded to beat Wisconsin-Whitewater in the losers bracket and will meet Saginaw in the semis, needing to win twice to advance to the championship round. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| Wichita State bowlers settle in Fri, 18 Apr 2008 02:29 CDT WSU bowlers settle in at national meet The Wichita State men's bowling team could play up to 77 games this weekend, so it's difficult to blame them for not putting much stock into the first four. The Shockers, competing in the USBC Intercollegiate Team Championships at Northrock Lanes, found themselves in 13th place in the 16-team field after the first of eight four-game blocks on Thursday. Warming up to lane conditions and putting a characteristically slow start behind them, the Shockers made a furious charge back into contention. WSU led the field after 28 games and finished day one of the three-day tournament in second place. "I don't even remember it at all," senior Chris Drewes said, at the conclusion of the first day, about the first four games. "It happened so long ago that I don't even remember it. Fresh lanes, usually we don't bowl well on. But then we get comfortable and we start to bowl a lot better." WSU will meet No. 15 seed Mohawk Valley Community College in the first round of match play today. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| WSU bats work out kinks in 10-1 win Fri, 18 Apr 2008 01:41 CDT After managing only four hits in its 3-0 loss at Nebraska on Tuesday, Wichita State's offense needed a cure. Enter Tabor College. The Blue Jays' pitching staff entered Thursday night's game with a 9.21 ERA. WSU hammered out 13 hits and drew 12 walks in a 10-1 victory Thursday at Eck Stadium, but the score could've been much worse had it not been for the 16 runners the Shockers left on base. "Struggling offensively is going to happen in baseball but we have to keep grinding and getting better," said centerfielder Andy Dirks, who went 2 for 3 with a walk. "We took the same approach tonight and it took us awhile to get going but when we did we scored some runs." | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Shockers stock up at point guard Fri, 18 Apr 2008 01:41 CDT Point guard is no longer a position of great worry for Wichita State basketball coach Gregg Marshall. The Shockers went through last season with one true point guard. Their season hit bottom when senior Matt Braeuer missed 10 games due to a concussion. Sophomore Gal Mekel, who filled in during Braeuer's absence, left WSU to play professionally in Israel. "We had zero minutes coming back at the position," Marshall said. "You have to have at least two point guards." Next season, Marshall will have that depth. Seward County Community College's Reggie Chamberlain (6-foot, 165 pounds) signed a letter of intent Wednesday. He will join Chipola (Fla.) College's Clevin Hannah, who signed last fall, in the Shocker backcourt. "We've got a rising junior (Hannah) and a rising sophomore (Chamberlain), both of whom played at, not a Division I level, but a higher level than high school," Marshall said. "That's what we needed." | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

Last season, WSU won all four meetings and outscored SIU 49-22. SIU, picked third in the preseason coaches poll, is in seventh in the MVC. Bradley swept the Salukis last weekend. | Tabor fills in at WSU Thu, 17 Apr 2008 01:40 CDT Not every college baseball coach would cram a game against an NAIA school into a crowded schedule. Wichita State coach Gene Stephenson isn't about to get cheated on his 56-game limit. He wants to play and he wants to give his players a chance to play. The seventh-ranked Shockers meet Tabor tonight in a game added to replace the Oklahoma rainout last week. "We'll give some guys an opportunity to play and pitch that really need an opportunity to get out on that mound and that field," Stephenson said Tuesday before a 3-0 loss at Nebraska. "We're going to see some guys that we need to look at." Freshman lefty Clint Maune, who hasn't pitched since April 2, will start. Justin Kemp (last outing March 30), Clinton McKeever (two-thirds of an inning this season) and Matt Smith (no throws since March 28) are likely to come out of the bullpen tonight. The starting lineup will not change much. Stephenson would like to sub in position players, if the situation allows. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| Tabor scouting report Thu, 17 Apr 2008 03:05 CDT Notes WSU and Tabor played twice in 1979 with the Shockers winning 21-2 and 16-3. Tabor had lost six straight entering Wednesday's doubleheader at Sterling. Tuesday, Ottawa outscored Tabor 32-11 in a doubleheader. LF Alfred Wilson leads Tabor with a .362 batting average. C Chris Brown has six home runs and 38 RBIs. WSU did not have many highlights in Tuesday's 3-0 loss at Nebraska. SS Dusty Coleman went 2 for 4, his first multiple-hit game since April 6. He doubled in the ninth, his second extra-base hit in his past 13 games. His double was the only extra-base hit for either team. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Three local runners roll on at KU Relays Sat, 19 Apr 2008 01:41 CDT The Wichita area will be well represented in today's boys 400-meter final at the Kansas Relays. Mike Flores of Maize, Shane Torgler of Kapaun Mount Carmel and Clarence Anderson of Southeast took three of the eight qualifying spots in Friday's preliminary round and compete in the final today scheduled for 10:45 a.m. "It's a big honor," Anderson said. "It's an opportunity for us to rep our city and state at a very big meet." Anderson had the third fastest qualifying time, though he finished second to Flores (49.28 seconds) in the third heat. "I was just trying to stay focused," said Anderson, who finished with a time of 50.07. "It's so many people yelling and screaming you have to concentrate and try not to think about anything but the race." | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Goddard sweeps Maize baseball Sat, 19 Apr 2008 02:42 CDT When the Maize baseball team looks back at its 4-2 and 5-1 losses to Goddard on Friday night, two areas will stand out. First, the Eagles pitched well enough to win. Garrett Gould struck out 10 in the first game and walked only one. Kurtis Schuyler retired the first nine batters in the second game. But their offense didn't give the pitching any support. The Eagles left a combined 18 runners on base over the two games. "We got some of their guys on the ropes but didn't capitalize," Maize coach Rocky Helm said. "It's so frustrating because we've swung the bats so well this year." Goddard also received stellar pitching. Dalton Banwart went the distance in the first game and the duo of Jordan Jennings and Jeremiah Emrich held Maize to three hits in the nightcap. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| Eagles hand Lions first loss Sat, 19 Apr 2008 01:41 CDT The Maize softball team set a goal to defeat Goddard this season. The Eagles did so, defeating the Lions 2-0 in the first game of a doubleheader on Friday. Courtney White threw a no-hitter for Maize, finishing the game with nine strikeouts and one walk as she handed Goddard its first loss. "It all came together," White said. "We had solid defense and started hitting the ball right away." The no-hitter would not have happened without a great play from shortstop Kaity Riffel in the seventh inning. With one out, Riffel dove for a ground ball going up the middle and threw to first from her knees to beat the runner. "I try to do what I can for our pitchers," Riffel said. "We have not been able to rely on our offense very much this season." | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Maize blanks another foe Sat, 19 Apr 2008 01:41 CDT Dribbling past Maize defenders, Heights forward Tarika Chappell had barely enough space to fire a shot. Uncontested shots have been a rarity this season against the Eagles' defense and even when Chappell finally broke free, Maize keeper Christina Farid was there to make the save. Scoring against Maize has proved to be an impossible task this season. The Eagles have yet to allow a goal after Friday night's 5-0 shutout victory at Heights. "We've got speed up top," Maize coach Nathan Wilkey said. "We've got skill up top. That helps, but really I think our midfield controls the ball.... They work hard in there, they keep the ball, and they work well together. That just opens up those options on the outside." Maize's midfield of Hannah Kern, Blair Terry and Miranda Holmes dominated possession and applied pressure on the Falcons' defense throughout the game. Kern scored the first of three first-half goals for Maize and Holmes finished the scoring in the second half on a penalty kick. With the ball constantly in opponents' territory, Farid isn't presented with many opportunities to make plays. But the senior has been just as crucial to Maize's 11-0 start. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Northwest tops Heights Sat, 19 Apr 2008 01:41 CDT Northwest scored five runs in the first inning and six in the second on its way to defeating Heights 13-1 in five innings on Friday night at Westurban. Northwest (10-1, 8-0) completed its season sweep against Heights (8-5, 7-3) after defeating them 10-0 on April 2. Northwest starter Ben Pearson threw a gem, allowing one run on four hits. Pearson struck out five hitters and walked one. "Ben threw a heck of a game," Northwest coach Travis Stockam said. "Of course it always helps and relaxes you to come out and pitch with a lead." The Grizzlies got their first two runners on base, but the Falcons quickly got two outs. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Collegiate senior touches 'em all Fri, 18 Apr 2008 01:41 CDT Playing multiple sports in a year is nothing for an athlete the caliber of Collegiate's Clint Cornejo. He's done that all his life. So going into the final semester of his senior year, Cornejo decided to step his game up. Already in baseball after playing quarterback last fall and point guard in the winter, Collegiate's version of Bo Jackson wanted to add tennis and track this spring. "Me being a senior, I figured why not try it, it's my last go-around," Cornejo said. Cornejo never had any worries about the physical demands. His biggest worry was a blessing from baseball coach Trent Nesmith. "I was a little nervous about asking," Cornejo said. "I had talked to people about it and they said it might be a little too much. But I didn't think it would be." | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Buffaloes mix in youngsters Fri, 18 Apr 2008 01:42 CDT Southeast senior Marissa Quillin, a distance runner, takes her role as a leader seriously. So each week when she meets with the Buffaloes' track team as part of the senior council, she pulls no punches. "We tell them what we've been seeing and what they need to do," said Quillin, who has committed to Pittsburg State. "If we need more discipline or if people have been acting up or not doing what they're supposed to do. We want them to represent Southeast well." That's especially important for the Southeast girls team, which is loaded with young talent. Of the nine girls Southeast is taking to the Kansas Relays today and Saturday in Lawrence, four are freshmen and sophomores. Southeast is also taking nine boys to the KU Relays, including senior Keith Hayes, a KU signee who won the 110 hurdles last year. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| East's Byers keeps on throwing Fri, 18 Apr 2008 01:41 CDT East junior Matt Byers stays busy all year. Byers, a quarterback for East's football squad as well as a key reserve for the basketball team, continues his year-round competition with track. He won the Class 6-5A javelin throw last week at the K.T. Woodman meet with a throw of 206-10. The next throw in any division was 25 feet shorter. "I was getting frustrated because, early in the season, I would throw well in practice, but when we came to the meet, I couldn't get it," Byers said. "So, at K.T. Woodman, I let it all out. I was pretty happy." Byers enjoys the constant activity and feels it gives him a leg up on the competition. "You are going to stay in shape," Byers said. "If you just play football or basketball, when that season is over, more than likely, you are not going to do much, just lie around and get lazy." | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Getting to know - Courtney Skaer Fri, 18 Apr 2008 02:50 CDT COURTNEY SKAER Courtney Skaer, a senior at East, is the defending City League diving champion. A former Level 10 gymnast who competed at Folger's Gymnastics through her freshman year in high school, she started diving her sophomore year. Skaer is part of East's IB program and has a 4.0 GPA with a 3.83 overall GPA. How does diving compare to gymnastics? " (Diving) was so interesting to me because it combined a lot of the elements of gymnastics -- flipping and twisting, but different timing. It was fun because my body already knew how to do it, but it was challenging because I had to learn how to manipulate different aspects, like timing.... I think a lot of gymnasts turn to diving when they quit. It's a natural progression." What kind of injuries did you suffer in gymnastics? | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Northwest blanks East soccer Fri, 18 Apr 2008 02:50 CDT Wichita Eagle correspondent The friendship between Abby Widrig and Nicole Randall extends beyond Northwest soccer teammates. The juniors have formed a connection off the field as well as on it -- playing not only on the same school team but club team as well. That familiarity led to the duo teaming up to score the first four goals of Northwest's 5-0 victory over East on a chilly Thursday at East. "It goes more than just Northwest," Grizzly coach Bobby Bribiesca said. "It's a good combination, these two. They look for each other. They're friends on the field, off the field." | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| Campus showing resilience early Thu, 17 Apr 2008 01:40 CDT Campus baseball coach Bryan Clasen felt after last season that his team was better than its 5-14 record. This season, after losing only one senior from last year's squad, the Colts are proving that to be true. Eight games into the season, the Colts are 7-1. "I knew that we'd be strong, but I didn't expect to be 7-1," Clasen said. "We were in a lot of games last year. We just didn't know how to win." Learning how to win is the biggest difference in the Colts. That stems from a boost in confidence. "We lost a lot of games by three runs or less," Clasen said. "We got down and we folded. Now we're not afraid to get down." | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Defense guiding Heights to wins Thu, 17 Apr 2008 01:40 CDT When Stephen Parks took over the girls soccer program at Heights this spring, he didn't see many things that needed change. Even after inheriting a team that was 4-13 last season. Heights has won seven of its first eight games this season behind an improved defense that held Southeast scoreless in a 3-0 victory Tuesday. The Falcons are 3-1 in the City League, a 3-1 loss to league-leading Northwest their only blip, and sit behind the unbeaten Grizzlies and Kapaun Mount Carmel. "A lot of it is team chemistry," Parks said. "The girls love each other. They are great friends. Off the field they're together. On the field they're together. Team chemistry can throw some wins your way, even when you're struggling." Switching up the defensive scheme has made a difference. In its seven victories, Heights has allowed three goals. Parks decided to keep the same four defenders back on defense, but changed their positions. Sophomores Rebekah Ramstack and Sarah Mohesky team with senior Amy Bauer and junior Megan Kassick to provide the Falcons with a reliable defense. But this year Ramstack is playing sweeper with Bauer and Mohesky on the outsides with Kassick returning at stopper. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| 81 Speedway to open season Sat, 19 Apr 2008 01:41 CDT After a record number of rainouts last season, this weekend's weather looks great for 81 Speedway as it opens its 44th season today with action in all 11 classes that will race for season-points championships. Heat races in all classes -- Sprint Cars, Modifieds, Late Models, Street Stock, Thumper, AAA Modifieds, Rookie Modifieds, Cruisers, Hornets, Junior Hornets and Youth Hornets -- begin at 1 p.m. at the speedway, located at 7700 N. Broadway. Speedway spokesman Warren Hardy said there would be a break in the schedule from 3:30 to 6 p.m. Consolation and feature events begin at 7. "We invite people to come out and tailgate, and the pit area will be open to public access from 3:30 to 5 p.m., so anybody can go down into the pit area and visit with a driver and see the race cars," Hardy said. Proceeds from today's races will benefit the local March of Dimes, Hardy said. The activities include a silent auction. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
