USD 501 Superintendent — The right tune Sat, 16 Aug 2008 02:35:00 EST Kevin Singer continues to impress us in his return to Topeka.
Economic Performance — Defying odds Sat, 16 Aug 2008 02:32:00 EST In difficult economic times, it's nice to know that Kansas, and particularly the Topeka area, is home to several companies that are not only alive and well but flourishing.
Letter: Catch community spirit Sat, 16 Aug 2008 02:35:00 EST Kudos to Connie Cook of Marion Lane Candles ("Neighborly act helps business survive," July 30) for her generous offer to help 2 Harts, another small business, whose survival is threatened by the extended construction time of the roundabout at S.W. 21st and Urish.
Letter: Providing safety net Sat, 16 Aug 2008 02:32:00 EST Gov. Kathleen Sebelius proclaimed Aug. 10-16 as Primary Care Safety Net Clinic Week. This recognizes the clinics in our state that literally provide a safety net for the most vulnerable Kansans — those who are uninsured and underinsured.
Letter: Back to the Stone Age Sat, 16 Aug 2008 02:32:00 EST It amazes me how far the politicians will go to remedy a situation by skirting the real issue. Little by little, they are taking away our God-given rights, and no one seems to have caught on to their tactics.
Letter: Priorities skewed Sat, 16 Aug 2008 02:35:00 EST The city of Topeka's streets have so many cracks and potholes, the only way you could miss them is to be in an airplane or not drive.
Letter: Time to let it go Sat, 16 Aug 2008 02:35:00 EST I see the No. 1 question given to the state school board candidates in The Capital-Journal's voters guide (July 28) was on the theory of evolution. Not that again!
TRUDY RUBIN: U.S., EUROPE NEED TO UNITE AGAINST INVASION Sat, 16 Aug 2008 01:43 CDT The Russian invasion of Georgia took place just before the 40th anniversary of the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia. As Russian tanks poured into South Ossetia, an ethnic enclave within Georgia, I remembered Aug. 22, 1968, when Soviet tanks rumbled into Prague; I lived there during the 1968 "Prague spring." The Czech crime, in Soviet eyes, was the effort to chart a course somewhat independent of Moscow. Russia's iron fist makes it look as if it is trying to re-create a previous era. Or to dominate the oil-rich Caspian region and the pipelines that provide Europe with much of its energy. The outcome of the Georgia crisis will show what kind of role Russia wants to play in the world. Moscow, of course, denies aggressive ambitions. It calls Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili "the aggressor" for sending troops into South Ossetia, accusing him of "war crimes." A little history is in order.
