Victim's mother testifies in second day of trial
Jerry D. Sellers Jr. — who is currently standing trial in Saline County District Court accused of raping a Salina girl — was sentenced in Harvey County Monday to just over 10 years in prison for fondling a 13-year-old girl in Newton.Sellers also will face additional trials in both counties on multiple counts of sexual exploitation of a child for images collected off the hard drives of his home and laptop computers, said Harvey County Attorney David Yoder.“I’m obviously watching what happens with interest what’s going on up there,” Yoder said when contacted Wednesday evening.The mother of the Salina girl testified in Saline County Wednesday that Sellers told her he was sorry for the things he had done and wished he could change them. Sellers’ attorneys argued Sellers’ statements weren’t in reference to the girl’s allegations of rape.The state rested its case against Sellers, 37, after another day of testimony in the trial, which is expected to conclude today. Sellers is accused of twice having sex with a Salina girl who was acquainted with him and was 15 at the time.

Car collides with building
Salina police received at least one report Wednesday afternoon of a car on South Ninth Street — with the driver slumped over the wheel and possibly passed out — just missing other vehicles as it headed north.A few seconds later, the car had crossed 50 yards or so of oncoming traffic — again missing any other cars — before eventually colliding with the back side of the Green Lantern convenience store at Ninth and Magnolia streets.Among those who saw the incident unfold was Jack Shirey, who was taking a friend to work and parked in the southbound lane of Ninth Street, just north of Parkway.Shirey said he heard a horn honk — he wasn’t sure if it was the car about to wreck or another one — and saw the car come through the intersection, over a crosswalk, and across the southbound lane.Shirey said the car passed behind his car as it crossed southbound traffic, then drove into the grassy frontage area and collided with the back of the store.The driver appeared to be slumped over the wheel, Shirey said. “He might have been blacked out, or passed out or something,” he said.The names of the driver and passenger in the car were not being released Wednesday afternoon; Salina police officer Andrew Zeigler said both were taken to Salina Regional Health Center, and that both were conscious immediately after the car collided with the building.n

Moran seeks comprehensive energy policy
Congressman Jerry Moran says America is long overdue for a comprehensive energy policy, but his vision has a gravity-defying quality to it.“We need to increase the supply and reduce the demand,” the Kansas Republican repeatedly said during a conference call with reporters Wednesday morning.Traditional economic models hold that as supply goes up, prices fall, which encourage higher levels of consumption. Conversely, as supplies dwindle, prices go up, discouraging consumption.Faced with high gasoline prices, Americans have been scrambling this summer for alternatives — car pools, mass transit, reduced travel.Moran said America needs to increase its supply of oil in order to bring down energy prices, and at the same time rein in its demand for fossil fuels.

Tri-Rivers Fair Parade still planned
Barring a lightning storm, the Tri-Rivers Fair Parade is set for 5:30 p.m. in downtown Salina, said Eric Blomquist, fair board president.Wednesday morning’s showers that put a half inch of rain into the gauge at the Salina Municipal Airport, had some folks wondering about the status of the annual procession of floats along Santa Fe Avenue.“We are going to have a parade, regardless. The only time we wouldn’t have it would be if the lightning were really, really bad, but I don’t anticipate that happening,” Blomquist said.Nearly 100 entries are expected, along with thousands of spectators lining Sante Fe from Elm to South streets.

Martin, Slattery winners in primary election
Jim Slattery advanced through the Democratic primary Tuesday receiving 65,920 votes to defeat Lee Jones, who collected 29,951. Slattery will face Sen. Pat Roberts, R-Kan., in the Nov,. 4 general election.In state Republican Senate races, incumbent Pete Brungardt, R-Salina, squeaked by Salina challenger Tom Arpke to win the 24th District primary, 3,962 to 3,760. In the 36th District, Larry Salmans bested Robert Tilford, 4,582 to 3,064.In the Republican race for the 6th District of the Kansas State School Board, incumbent Kathy Martin topped challenger Bill Pannbacker 15,329 to 14,149.In the Kansas House of Representatives, Republican Incumbent Don Schroeder garnered 1,452 votes to Mitch Powell’s 627 in the 74th District primary. Incumbent Virginia Beamer defeated Don Hineman by five votes in the 118th District race, 1,853 to 1,848.In the 6th District of the Kansas Board of Education, Incumbent Kathy Martin, with 15,329 votes, defeated Bill Pannbacker, 14,149.Two incumbents fell in the Rooks County primary. Republican John Ruder defeated Second District county commissioner Gary LeRock, 258 to 175, and Randy Axelson’s 455 votes were enough to defeat Rooks County Sheriff Roger Mongeau. Daryl Thornburg finished second with 412 votes, followed by Ryan Cellmer, 311, Mongeau, 177, and Jeannine Spiess, 24.Third District Rooks County commissioner Patrick W. Hageman won the Republican primary with 258 votes to 217 from challenger Sherlyn D. Kats.

Safe, cash taken from Big Cheese Pizza
The theft of a safe containing cash from Big Cheese Pizza is being investigated by Salina police.The theft happened between just after midnight and 3 a.m. Wednesday from the restaurant at 732 S. Broadway, Deputy Police Chief Carson Mansfield said.Taken was $4,000 to $5,000 cash and a portable safe, along with some miscellaneous papers, he said.A window on the northwest side of the business had been boarded due to a recent storm. Entry was made through that window, and the safe was taken from a shelf, Mansfield said.

Handgun, loaded magazines taken from car
A Salina man reported to police the overnight theft of a 9mm handgun and two loaded magazines from his car.Between 11 p.m. Tuesday and 6 a.m. Wednesday, the car was parked in a driveway at 1220 Funstan, Deputy Police Chief Carson Mansfield said.The car owner, Austin D. Wasinger, 23, told police that the gun and magazines, valued at $400, plus a Garmin brand global positioning system device valued at $300, were taken. There was no forced entry and Wasinger could not say for sure the doors had been locked, Mansfield said.

Hoffman leads big in Dickinson County sheriff's race
ABILENE — Undersheriff Gareth Hoffman appears to have won the primary race for Dickinson County sheriff, and he faces no opponent in the general election.With 25 of 32 precincts reporting, Hoffman had 1,513 votes; Deputy Terry Smith had 663, and Deputy Bob Garten had 576.Neither Hoffman nor Smith could not be reached by telephone Tuesday evening. Garten declined comment.Hoffman said during the campaign that he believes the department is on a sound footing but needs to devote more resources to investigating crimes.Smith also said the department needs a second investigator, and had promised to address the department’s fractured relationships with area law enforcement agencies.Garten, who had sued the sheriff’s office in 1990 after he was fired two years earlier, is on medical leave following a crash last year during a high-speed car chase.

A winner: Dickinson County delivers for Brungardt
Sen. Pete Brungardt squeaked out a win Tuesday night, a victory for the state Senate 24th District that was delivered by Dickinson County.“That’s miraculous,” said an obviously relieved Brungardt when he learned of the outcome late Tuesday. “I would have guessed if I didn’t win Saline County and didn’t win Ottawa County, it was over.”The unofficial count was Brungardt, 3,962, to Tom Arpke’s 3,760. Arpke, who is chairman of the Saline County Republican Party, beat Brungardt by 60 votes in Saline County and 92 votes in Ottawa County.“That is disappointing,” Arpke said when he learned of the outcome. He said that voters appeared to be responding to his message of fiscal frugality and support for coal-fired power plants.Brungardt said Arpke ran an effective word-of-mouth campaign, had good volunteers, and made effective use of negative ads just before the election.“I really thought my record stood for itself,” Brungardt said. Brungardt has been in office since 2000, and has a reputation for being a moderate Republican.He’ll face off against Democrat and Salina City Commissioner Abner Perney in the November general election.
