| Back to School fair planned The Back to School Fair for students in Saline County is set for 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at the Bicentennial Center.The event will include numerous free services for students, including school physicals, dental check-ups, hair trims and screenings for depression and allergies.Other activities and entertainment will include various local cheer squads, actors in Salina Community Theatre’s current production of “Grease,” the local band Jazz 7 and an opportunity for free photographs by Monarch Portraits.“A lot of times, people don’t think about those children who can’t afford to get copies of their school pictures,” said Marcia Demuth, one of the event’s organizers.In all, Demuth said, there will be about 40 different booths, offering information about various youth-oriented activities in the Salina area, such as Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts.The fair also will include distribution of packages of school supplies. The supplies are for students who live in Saline County and are eligible for free or reduced price lunches at school.The free packages of school supplies are only for people who registered for the supplies earlier this week. In all, about 1,500 packages of school supplies will be handed out at the fair, Demuth said.She said the event’s other activities are open to anyone, regardless of income.“It’s open to the public. Anyone can come,” she said.The event is sponsored by the Healthy Community/Healthy Youth Initiative, American Family Insurance and many other community sponsors. |

| Murder suspect identified A McPherson man was charged with first-degree murder in Ellsworth County District Court Wednesday for the shooting of rural Ellsworth County resident Richard Kroll.Brian Charles Orr, 30, is being held in the Ellsworth County Jail in lieu of a $1 million bond, according to a written statement from Ellsworth County Attorney Joe Shepack.Orr was charged with one count first-degree murder, one count of aggravated robbery and one count of possession of a firearm by a convicted drug felon.Shepack’s statement explained that the murder charge does not indicate premeditation. The charge Orr faces alleges that a murder took place while a person was attempting to commit an inherently dangerous felony, which in this case was aggravated robbery.The date of Orr’s first court appearance had not yet been set, although Shepack expects it will be Friday afternoon. |
