| City commission votes to restrict outside watering When talk about raising water rates turned to how much users would pay, Salina Mayor John Vanier brought Monday’s discussion by city commissioners back on point with a simple observation.“(Revenue) isn’t why we’re doing this. Brown lawns don’t look good, but not having any water doesn’t look good either,” he said.Commissioners passed 5-0 a measure prohibiting outdoor watering between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. through Sept. 30. An exception will be for people installing new lawns. They’ll be allowed to apply for special permits to water those areas at other times until the grass is established.But commissioners decided to postpone for a week taking action on a plan for water rates that a meeting observer charged could double the rate paid by the average-sized lot owner in Salina with a sprinkler system. |
